Laura Dern's Look Totally Changes Without Her Signature Dirty Blonde Hair

From her breakout role in "Blue Velvet" to the pop culture behemoth that is the "Jurassic Park" franchise – it's fairly safe to say that Laura Dern has firmly established herself as a Hollywood staple. Throughout Dern's stunning transformation, one thing about her look that has remained largely consistent is her signature dirty-blonde hair (which was actually a much lighter shade of blonde in her younger years). That recognizable hue is so synonymous with the actor that she looks like an almost entirely different person without it.

While it's true that Dern has mostly kept things consistent with respect to her hair color over the years, the "F Is for Family" star and occasional audiobook narrator has been known to mix things up from time to time. Take, for instance, early 2014, when she traded her dirty-blonde hair for more of a strawberry-blonde look, swapping her classic girl-next-door aesthetic for something a bit more fiery. The photo above, in particular, was snapped at the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills that January . Dern was not up for any awards at the Golden Globes that year, though she did serve as a presenter, meaning the audience in attendance definitely got an eyeful of her altered look.

Laura Dern's strawberry-blonde look in the mid-2010s is hardly the only time the acclaimed actor eschewed her usual dirty-blonde locks for something a bit different. That being said, if you want to see some of Dern's more radical hair transformations, you'll have to look towards her more otherworldly film and TV roles. For example, Dern rocked a short, straight, platinum-blonde bob for her role as Diane Evans in Showtime's 2017 "Twin Peaks" revival series — which reunited her with "Blue Velvet" co-star Kyle MacLachlan. And even that striking color, so platinum it bordered on white, paled in comparison (no pun intended) to the bright-red version of Diane's bob she wore in the series.

Then, there's Dern's role in the "Star Wars" franchise. The veteran actor co-starred in the 2017 film "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" as Vice-Admiral Amilyn Holdo, whose own signature, flapper-esque hairdo has a distinct purple hue. "I have purple hair," Dern laughed while speaking to With Ashley And Company shortly before the film's release in December 2017, being careful not to spill any secrets about her character prematurely. "My mother's very excited about the purple hair," she said later in the interview, adding, "She loves the look and the costume."

In the end, it's a testament to Dern's versatility as both a performer and a style icon. While she has one particular look she can safely fall back on, she's more than capable of trying something different — both in her personal life and on the silver screen.
