Kenny Rogers' Bumpy, Five-Marriage Journey To Happily Ever After
When you're famous for a song titled "The Gambler," you're bound to take some gambles on love! Kenny Rogers certainly did as he rose to fame across multiple genres, from psychedelic rock with his band The First Edition to more country-infused songs like "The Gambler." He was also well known for romantic country duets with Dolly Parton, like the iconic "Islands in the Stream." Despite their chemistry onstage, Rogers and Parton never dated and were only ever friends.
It's in his personal life that Rogers really took the gambles. The "Through the Years" singer was married a total of five times and had five children. His early marriages were short, while his later ones often lasted longer, but with greater ups and downs. But Rogers is no womanizer and has never been prone to scandalous cheating rumors. As he told Fox News in 2012, he's more than happy to tie the knot when he's in love. "You can't say I'm afraid of commitment. I've been married five times!" he told the outlet. His fifth and final marriage to Wanda Miller was the stuff of romantic comedy dreams, with a surprising meet-cute and a lasting love that was well worth the wait for The Gambler.
Kenny Rogers married his first wife when he was still a teenager
Kenny Rogers married his first wife, Janice Gordon, when they were both just 19 in 1958. It was a rushed marriage that stemmed from Rogers getting Gordon pregnant. In his 2012 memoir, "Luck or Something Like It," Rogers said that the pregnancy occurred the very first time they had sex. When it came to their relationship, Rogers wrote (via The Sun), "I loved her. At 19 I thought, 'This is OK with me.' Her parents thought I'd ruined her life and were determined to break me. The marriage didn't work and it's sad, because I think it could have."
Rogers and Gordon welcomed a daughter, Carol Lynne, and ultimately divorced in 1960. The "Lady" singer had no contact with his daughter, but that was an agreed-upon situation between him and Gordon. As he explained to Fox News in 2012, "[T]hat was my promise to them, that I would be her father but he [his ex-wife's second husband] would be her Dad, and I don't want to disrupt that. He stepped in at a time that was really awkward for all of us and he became her Dad, and I love him for that. He was a good guy."
He married his second wife shortly after his first
Kenny Rogers married his second wife, Jean Massey, in 1960. They divorced three years later and shared no children. Not a lot of information is known about Jean, other than that their relationship clearly remained quite private and brief.
Rogers has addressed his many marriages over the years, demonstrating a genuine love and care for each partner. "This may seem like an absurd statement, but every woman I married, I really loved when I married her. And I don't blame them for the marriage falling apart," Rogers told Reuters. He continued, explaining that the blame lay with his chosen career as a musician. "That's why I say that music is a mistress, because you can't wait to get out there to it, and usually the mistress wins in a situation like that."
Kenny Rogers married Margo Anderson, entering into a longer but volatile relationship
Shortly after his second marriage ended, Kenny Rogers married his third wife, Margo Anderson, in 1964. Rogers was still early in his music career, with the minor hit "That Crazy Feeling" to his name, and he actually played at Anderson's high school reunion in 1966 at her request. According to Tom Whitehurst of the Caller Times, whose mother was at the event, Rogers played a few songs, but the audience wasn't terribly impressed with his talents at the time. In just a few years, Rogers would become a member of The First Edition and become a true star.
Even after that kind of gesture, Rogers and Anderson's relationship was a volatile one until their divorce in 1976. According to an excerpt from his memoir, Anderson was critical of Rogers. "I don't ever like to blame someone else, but in this case, [the fights] were all her fault," Rogers wrote in his book "Luck or Something Like It" (via Woman's World). "The good news is, I didn't have to remember any of my shortcomings because she did and didn't hesitate to remind me."
The couple did welcome a son, Rogers' second child, Kenny Rogers Jr. Like his first child, Rogers admitted he didn't have the strongest bond with Kenny Jr., telling People in 1980, "I would wish desperately that my relationship with Kenny Jr. were better." In a later interview with the outlet in 1982, he partially blamed his career, saying, "As you try to get ahead, it's too easy to think that these kids are still going to be kids tomorrow and that once you get your current project done, you'll spend some time with them."
He fell for actress Marianne Gordon but faced a big payout when they split
Kenny Rogers' fourth wife, Marianne Gordon, worked in Hollywood and was one of his longest-lasting relationships. Gordon had appeared in films like "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini," "Rosemary's Baby," and "Little Darlings." She also appeared alongside Rogers in the TV movie "The Gambler" and several of its sequels. The couple welcomed a son, Christopher Cody Rogers, in 1981. Christopher suffered from hyaline membrane disease (HMD) but survived. Rogers spoke about spending more time with Christopher as a child, telling People, "Every day I see what he's doing that he didn't do the day before. I know the hard way that we cannot recapture this age, and I'm not missing those things, because I don't think I'm going to have another chance. This is it."
Rogers and Gordon divorced in 1993, and Rogers provided his ex-wife with a hefty $60 million payout. The number made headlines, but Rogers had no hard feelings about the settlement, telling The Irish Independent in 2006, "She deserves every penny." He explained that when they met, his first band, The First Edition, broke up and he owed $60,000 and "didn't have a dime," but she stood by him.
Kenny Rogers met his fifth and final wife Wanda Miller on a date ... with someone else
The courtship between Kenny Rogers and his fifth and final wife, Wanda Miller, sounds like something out of a romantic comedy. Rogers met Miller while he was on a blind date with another person. Miller was the hostess at the restaurant where he had taken his date, and he recalled in his memoir that he felt something like love at first sight. "I don't know what and I don't know why, but there was just something incredibly different about her from the minute I saw her. She had a smile, not a hostess smile, but something more genuine, and believe it or not, it rocked me to my core," he wrote (via Showbiz CheatSheet).
Rogers was a gentleman and concluded his date but later reached out to the restaurant to find out who Miller was. "I didn't want to go back to the restaurant, but I didn't want to miss this opportunity, if there was one," Rogers said in his memoir. The gamble paid off, though, because his friend who had set up the blind date connected him with Miller's manager and they were able to formally meet.
Kenny Rogers and Wanda Miller shared a significant age gap
Kenny Rogers and Wanda Miller shared a significant age gap, one that was confusing to map out at first. Rogers was initially told Miller was 21, but she was actually 26. At the time, Rogers was 54. Regardless, it was a large age gap at 28 years, one her parents didn't approve of. "Wanda and I dated for almost six months before she worked up the nerve to tell her parents about me. Actually, I'm not sure whether she told them, or they read it in the tabloids. Either way, it was not pleasant," Rogers wrote in his memoir. He also noted that he was "two years older" than her parents, which "put an awkward slant on things right from the start. Not for me, but I'm sure it would be troublesome to any caring parent, and I understood that."
Eventually, Miller's parents approved of the relationship. Rogers recalled a conversation with her parents, telling Fox News in 2012 that they didn't appreciate the situation, but Rogers assured them he understood and didn't think he would approve if he were in their shoes. "I will make you a promise. I will never lie to her and I will never lie to you.' Now they're my best friends," he said. Their nearly 25-year marriage made Miller and Rogers one of the most successful age gap relationships in entertainment.
Kenny Rogers didn't plan on having more children when he met Wanda Miller but happily came around
When Kenny Rogers met and later married Wanda Miller, he was already a father of three and felt that he was done having kids. He told The Irish Independent that he warned Miller he wasn't interested in having more kids, and she agreed at first. But on her 31st birthday, she asked for kids, and he agreed. "I did some soul-searching and realized it was unfair of me to take her childbearing years," he said. "I also didn't want her to wake up at 50 and me be dead and for her to have to say, 'I wish I hadn't married Kenny, I could have had kids.'"
Miller became pregnant with twins, which Rogers told the outlet he was "thrilled" about, but admitted it was "overwhelming." The couple welcomed twin sons Jordan and Justin in 2004. Rogers admitted having children at an older age (he was 65 when they were born) worried him, but said, "I think being a father is what I'm best at. Even if it did take me five attempts to get here! But maybe anybody who doesn't get it right after five marriages doesn't deserve to!"
He was with his 'soulmate' until his death in 2020
Kenny Rogers and Wanda Miller were together for almost 25 years before he died in 2020 at the age of 81. Rogers often gushed about Miller in interviews and once told Fox News she was his "soulmate." He continued, "She knows me better than anyone has ever known me before. We've been together for 20 years. We have identical twin boys who are 8 years old. I have such great respect for her as a mother. She is the most phenomenal mother I have ever seen. The boys are so lucky to have her and so am I."
Miller was devastated by Rogers' death. She gave her first interview three years after he died to People in 2023, sharing, "I miss his love, his support. I miss his touch. I miss everything about him. I wish we could have that one last conversation just to say, 'Are you good? Are you OK?'" She said that Rogers died at the home they shared with their sons, recalling the day as one filled with "ice cream and movies."
