Prince George might be second in line to the British throne, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have any other, non-royal interests. In fact, the young prince has reportedly already made up his mind about what he wants to be when he grows up. In 2024, when George was around 11 years old, the future king paid a visit to Wiveton Hall Cafe in Norfolk with his mother, Princess Catherine, and some of her friends. They were given a tour of the kitchen, and George reportedly looked at the space with stars in his eyes.
In fact, Desmond MacCarthy, the owner of the cafe, proudly told the Daily Mail that the prince took one look at the wood-fired pizza oven and proclaimed, "That's what I want to do when I grow up!" Look out everyone, there might be a royal chef in our future! While some royals do work regular jobs, George won't be able to do so indefinitely because of his duties to the crown. The prince has other interests too. Prince William once shared with Olympic swimmers that his oldest son "loves scuba diving," per InStyle.
Funnily enough, George's father also dreamt of a regular job when he was a child. In 1992's "Diana: Her True Story," author Andrew Morton recalled how William once told Princess Diana, "When I grow up I want to be a policeman and look after you, Mummy." Looking back, it was a heartbreakingly sweet statement. However, his little brother quickly reminded William that he could forget about it: "Quick as a flash, [Prince] Harry replied, with a note of triumph in his voice, 'Oh no, you can't. You've got to be king.'"
Prince George might get to pursue some of his dreams
For centuries, the men in line to the British throne received military training and served their country before stepping into their royal roles, Princes William and Harry included. However, in 2023, the Daily Mail confirmed Prince George wouldn't be obligated to follow in their footsteps. Historian Dominic Sandbrook argued this was a mistake in an age where The Firm is in dire need of public support, pointing out, "The tradition of royals joining the Armed Forces, even for brief periods, lends crucial legitimacy to the monarchy."
But one of William's old friends clarified that George gets to decide whether he wants to serve in the army, or work. "In theory, there is nothing to stop George from pursuing a career as an astronaut, for example, if that's what he wants, and then becoming king later," the friend surmised. It appears like George might be able to have the best of both worlds: Qualify as a chef and become king. As for what might happen if George decides to decline the throne in favor of working full-time, well, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry revealed that his own son, Prince Archie, also has some grand aspirations. During his visit to the Netherlands, for the 2022 Invictus Games, the prince shared in a speech that he dreams pretty big. "When I talk to my son Archie about what he wants to be when he grows up, some days it's an astronaut, other days it's a pilot — a helicopter pilot obviously," Harry shared, per Today. "But what I remind him is that no matter what you want to be when you grow up, it's your character that matters most."
