10 Celebs Who Shamelessly Broke The Cardinal Fashion Rule Of Wedding Guest Style

No matter how traditional or informal a wedding is, there are some rules that should never be broken. Like wearing something old, new, borrowed, and blue, for example. It's just tradition! But the cardinal fashion rule is one that everyone knows: never, ever, wear white to a wedding — unless it's your own wedding, of course. It's disrespectful and could risk upstaging the bride (although some brides choose not to wear white on their wedding days). Despite this seemingly common-sense rule, many celebrities have made this fashion faux pas as wedding guests over the years.

Some of the most inappropriate celebrity wedding guest dresses featured stars wearing white, off-white, or something practically white to another person's wedding. Everyone from Dua Lipa to Catherine, Princess of Wales, has done this, and Victoria Beckham even wore white to two different weddings. In their defense, some celebrities were asked by the newlyweds to wear white, so you can't blame them for following directions. However, it's still jarring to see a celebrity wear something that goes against conventional wedding norms, like the stars featured below did.

Catherine, Princess of Wales wore an incredibly pale yellow dress to her brother-in-law Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle in May 2018, which raised eyebrows for looking white in certain snapshots. The Alexander McQueen coat dress almost matched with her daughter Princess Charlotte's white bridesmaid's dress. Kate Middleton's saving grace was that her dress didn't look bridal, as it resembled a long coat, plus she paired it with pale yellow flowers in her hat and simple tan heels. As for Charlotte, she was likely given permission to wear white because she was in the wedding (and looked so cute!).

Kylie Jenner's dress may not have been pure white at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos' June 2025 wedding, but it still seemed to steal the spotlight from the bride. The corset-inspired dress toed the line between white and silver, and featured a low neckline, cut-outs underneath the bust, and tiny black bows under the straps. It definitely sparked backlash. "Can't wait to see Lauren wear white to Kylie's wedding someday," one person quipped on X. Others criticized Kylie's 'fit for being revealing as well.

Dua Lipa wore a wow-worthy white dress to the wedding of Simon Porte Jacquemus and Marco Maestri in August 2022. The completely sheer dress showed off her white underwear underneath, leaving very little to the imagination. Dua Lipa revealed in a 2025 interview with Harper's Bazaar that white was the wedding's dress code for the guests, and that her dress was actually designed by Jacquemus. "So it was at his request that I wore this dress to his wedding," she said. "I absolutely loved it. I felt so good in it."

Kristen Stewart boldly wore white to Emma Roberts' wedding to Cody John in July 2026, but the way she styled it didn't take any attention away from the bride. She dressed in a menswear-inspired look, with a white button-down shirt cuffed at the sleeves and paired with a black tie, a black miniskirt, and black sunglasses, as seen above-left in a picture shared to Instagram by Ashley Benson. Later, Stewart took off her tie and glasses and added a black baseball cap in a photo clasping hands with Julia Roberts, shared on Instagram by stylist Brit Elkin (seen above-right).

Emma Roberts has worn white to a wedding herself! The "Scream Queens" star's creamy white maid of honor gown was designed by bride Kara Smith and co-maid of honor Brit Elkin. Roberts had permission from the bride to wear this dress, as all the bridesmaids wore white gowns made by Smith and Elkin's fashion brand, Elkin. The company posted a picture on Instagram in November 2015, captioned, "Only the coolest bride designs all of her maidens' dresses, and has them wear white." Roberts looked stunning in her low-cut, silky white gown.

Hailey Bieber shamelessly shared photos on Instagram of her sexy white dress that she wore to the wedding of Stephanie Shepherd and Larry Jackson in June 2023. The turtleneck dress featured an open back that revealed a side view of her breasts, and it was skin-tight to show off her curves. 

Bieber didn't say if the bride approved of the look beforehand or not, but we can imagine it would have been very awkward if she hadn't.

Victoria Beckham has worn white as a wedding guest two times. The fashion designer wore a white dress with a silver chain pattern to the 2019 wedding of Real Madrid football star, Sergio Ramos, and Pilar Rubio (seen above). Apparently when you're as famous as Victoria Beckham, you can make your own etiquette rules! 

In 2022, she wore white again to the wedding of former British Vogue Editor-in-Chief Edward Enninful and Alec Maxwell. For this one, guests were actually encouraged to wear white or black for the wedding (per Who What Wear).

When Jessica Simpson served as matron of honor for her sister, Ashlee Simpson, at Ashlee's wedding to Evan Ross in August 2014, she wore a white lacy dress that looked like a wedding dress. However, this was another situation where bridesmaids were requested to wear white.

Jessica shared a picture of her and her daughter Maxwell, then 2, on Instagram holding hands as they walked down a grassy aisle in matching white dresses. "I am madly [in] love with this moment!" Jessica wrote in the caption.

Power couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z both wore white when Bey's sister, Solange Knowles, married Alan Ferguson in November 2014. Beyoncé looked gorgeous in a form-fitting midi dress with sky-high white platform heels as she walked hand-in-hand with Jay-Z, as seen in the above picture from the event. He was dressed in a white suit with matching shirt and white bowtie. This wasn't shade, though. Solange asked her guests to wear white for the occasion.

Olivia Wilde claims she was just joking when she broke fashion protocol while attending Colton Underwood and Jordan C. Brown's wedding in May 2023. The "Don't Worry Darling" star shared a picture of her gown on her Instagram story, writing, "Wore a wedding dress to a wedding just so I could make a joke about it in my toast," (per E! News). She also shared another picture from the big day, confirming, "The grooms approved." No harm, no foul!
