One of the oldest sitcom tropes is the mean mother-in-law. From "The Honeymooners" to "Everybody Loves Raymond," a spouse's overbearing mom can be very funny, and more than a few viewers can relate. But for one woman, her dreaded mother-in-law put her through years of gaslighting that finally came to an end.

Posting on the CharlotteDobreYouTube subreddit, user Kind-Sock457 explained the years-long battle she had with her mother-in-law over her name. Before digging into the argument over her name, Kind-Sock457 gave some other clues about how she knew her mother-in-law didn't like her, explaining, "She (on multiple occasions) has given me a list of women she wished my husband would have married instead of me. She told me I needed weight loss surgery when I was pregnant ... Also, when I was pregnant, she told mutual friends she had to stay with me so I didn't 'screw up the baby.'"

From there, the beleaguered daughter-in-law detailed how, from the moment they met, her mother-in-law has consistently called her by the wrong name and refuses to correct her mistake: "She will literally scream and start rage crying if you correct her on something and insist she is right. This is exactly what happened. She flies into a rage and screams at me that she knows my name."

The mother-in-law's steadfast refusal to admit she was using the wrong name for Kind-Sock457 went so far as to act confused when her own son would talk about his wife: "When my husband is talking to her and uses my name, she says, 'who's that?' To which my husband replies, 'uh ... my wife?'" But the mother-in-law was finally forced to accept a gift she didn't like when her own grandchild corrected her.

The mother-in-law needed to go to the source before believing her daughter-in-law

Along with delicious Thanksgiving leftovers, the holiday is also famous for simmering family arguments coming to a head, which is exactly what happened to Kind-Sock457. As she explains it, the whole family was gathered to celebrate the holiday and, during a moment of peace, she quizzed her five-year-old son on some safety procedures. Making sure her child knew his address and phone number, she also asked for her name. At that moment, the mother-in-law butted in and called Kind-Sock457 by the wrong name. According to her, "My son looks at me wide-eyed and obviously confused ... partly because he knows that's not my name." When her son said her actual name, the mother-in-law wouldn't let it go, insisting that she was right. Finally, after her husband stepped in to tell her she was wrong, CharlotteDobreYouTube's mother-in-law sulked away.

Still refusing to give in, the upset mother-in-law later cornered Kind-Sock457's own mother, demanding that she admit Kind-Sock457 had been lying for years. For the Redditor, this was a shining moment: "I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy Thanksgiving a little more this year knowing that MIL thought we were running a ten-year campaign to embarrass her."

Kind-Sock457 worried that laughing at her mother-in-law getting her comeuppance made her a jerk, which the other users of AITA quickly shot down. One user pointed out, "You corrected her. Your husband has corrected her. She chose not to believe you (or anyone else, for that matter) when you corrected her. Instead, she blew up." While another said, "I don't for a second believe she did not know your name. She was power tripping."
