The Band That Influenced Adele's Interest In Music

There are many reasons to celebrate the 90s: Comfortable shoes like Doc Martens were considered cool, Leonardo DiCaprio melted hearts while freezing his buns off on Titanic, Seinfeld heralded a new era of Must See TV, and hip hop group Public Enemy found mainstream success in their seminal hit "911 Is a Joke," calling out disparities in ambulance response rates in Black communities (via HuffPost and NME). Female empowerment also permeated the culture back in those days, with the UK's Spice Girls inspiring a young Adele Adkins, leaving an indelible impression on the pop icon in the making.

"People always think I joke about this," the "Someone Like You" singer told Vogue, "but the Spice Girls blew up when I was seven. And seeing them coming from a humble background — there was hope in it. It was really a massive part of my life when the whole Girl Power thing happened."

This Spice Girl is Adele's favorite

At a Spice Girls reunion show last year after announcing her split from husband Simon Konecki, de facto queen of heartbreak Adele couldn't help gushing on Instagram: "Oiii last time I saw the Spice Girls at Wembley was 21 years ago! Tonight with my nearest and dearest i cried, laughed, screamed, danced, reminisced and fell back in love with my 10 year old self," she wrote (via Marie Claire Australia). "It's no secret how much I love them, how much they inspired me to run for my life and never look back."

As for the 15-time Grammy winner's favorite Spice Girl? It's hands down Ginger Spice. "I connected to Geri and then I just ended up sort of finding myself at quite a young age," Adele revealed to Vogue. Posing with Ginger, Scary, Baby, and Sporty Spice in a photo posted on the group's official Instagram, the "Hello" singer appears to have come full circle. "I finally got to meet Ginger, I got drunk with the girls and quite frankly I can't believe how far I've come," Adele posted, adding "thank you for the madness I get to live, I couldn't have got here without you 5 BRITISH legends! I love you!"
