How World Leaders Reacted To Biden's Presidential Win

As the nation reacts to the news that Joe Biden will be the 46th president of the United States, with history-making Kamala Harris as his VP, it's easy to forget that the rest of the world has its opinions, too. Our neighbors to the north and those across the ocean have been impacted by the Trump presidency, too, and leaders from around the globe are coming forward with their own opinions on the news.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted to Biden and Harris a show of support and a desire to work together on common interests, making no mention of President Trump. "Congratulations to Joe Biden on his election as President of the United States and to Kamala Harris on her historic achievement," he said, continuing, "The US is our important ally and I look forward to working closely together on our shared priorities, from climate change to trade and security."

President of France Emmanuel Macron didn't exactly mince words as he congratulated the newly-minted POTUS and VPOTUS, hinting that they were left with plenty of work to be done. "The Americans have chosen their President. Congratulations @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris! We have a lot to do to overcome today's challenges. Let's work together!" he said on Twitter

Angela Merkel and Justin Trudeau react to Biden's victory

Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and President Trump have had a history of "chilly" interactions, reports Politico, and in August Merkel laughed off the suggestion that she had been "charmed" by Trump. Whatever her feelings of the outgoing POTUS, Merkel kept things positive and only looked forward as she extended her congratulations to the president- and vice president-elect. "Joe Biden will be the 46th President of the United States. From my heart, I wish him good luck and success, and also congratulate Kamala Harris, the first woman Vice President-elect of her country," she said (via The New York Times).

Similarly, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Donald Trump have had what the Global News calls several "prickly exchanges," so the lack of mention of the outgoing president in his statement isn't exactly surprising. "Congratulations, @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris. Our two countries are close friends, partners, and allies. We share a relationship that's unique on the world stage. I'm really looking forward to working together and building on that with you both," he tweeted. In an official statement, Trudeau further explained his planned agenda, saying, "We will further build on this foundation as we continue to keep our people safe and healthy from the impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and work to advance peace and inclusion, economic prosperity, and climate action around the world..."
