Kelly Clarkson Reveals Why She's Getting A Divorce

Like the rest of us, Kelly Clarkson has had a rough 2020; she has herself called the year a "dumpster fire" and an "emotional roller coaster" (via E! Online). And one of the occurrences to shift Clarkson's life this year has been her divorce from now-ex husband Brandon Blackstock. This decision and the aftermath, however, have helped the singer to rediscover herself and grow into her won power. At least that's what it seemed she was getting at during a revealing segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Nov. 24.

When prompted to complete the sentence, "I'm grateful in 2020 for the lesson I learned about ... " Clarkson answered, "Myself." She elaborated: "Even at 38, I feel like I'm always changing and progressing in a good sense, in a good way. And I always want to make sure I'm being the best version of myself."  While this could hint at her reason for divorce, it was how she elaborated on this statement that made viewers believe Clarkson was referencing her decision to focus on herself and her own healing and growth by divorcing Blackstock in June.

Kelly Clarkson gets personal about her outlook

She went on to say that her mother, Jeanne, once gave her a piece of advice that resonated deeply at this time: "My mom has been telling me since I was a kid: You are who you surround yourself with," Kelly said. "You want to make sure you're surrounded by people that also want to be the best versions of themselves and also want a good common goal for everyone, not just themselves, right?"

She went on to say the following, leaving very little doubt about whom she was speaking: "People, like, could be bad for you in a certain time. And I think that everybody just goes, 'Oh, well that means they're bad.' Well it doesn't necessarily mean that, it just means that you're on different paths. And I think that that's okay ... Everybody's on a different learning curve" (E! Online).

It appears Clarkson has remained on cordial terms with her ex, the father of her two children. When she won her first Emmy or outstanding entertainment talk show host, she thanked Blackstock, even though the award came just weeks after she had filed for divorce (Today).
