Moments In Ferris Bueller's Day Off Only Adults Seem To Catch
Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a 1986 film directed by John Hughes that follows the adventures and exploits of high school student, Ferris Bueller, who decides to skip school one day and ropes his friend and girlfriend into coming with him. Matthew Broderick plays the titular character, and for many people his face is forever intertwined with the role of Bueller.
That makes the fact that Broderick almost missed out on the opportunity to play Ferris Bueller nearly unbelievable. He told Sirius XM's Radio Andy that he worried about becoming typecast as a character that speaks directly to the camera. "I thought [the script] was great, and I had a teeny hesitation because having just done [the plays], Brighton Beach [Memoirs] and Biloxi [Blues], I was like, "Wow, I'm talking to the audience, just like in these plays ... and even in [the 1985 movie] Ladyhawke, he talks to the camera a bit" (via YouTube).
That's not even the most unbelievable thing about Ferris Bueller. As BuzzFeed points out, watching the movie as an adult is nearly impossible because so many key plot points just don't add up.
A lot of things in Ferris Bueller just don't add up
For starters, there's no way that Ferris didn't put some planning into this. 22 Words writes that Ferris has already skipped school nine times that school year, and that he really spends a lot of time and energy making it happen: Recording his voice, dressing like Sloane's dad, and more. "Does he go through this amount of effort every single time he skips school?! It seems like more work than just...going to school."
Another oddity? Ferris changes his clothes a whopping nine times throughout the movie. "Somehow in the space of one morning, the truant changed his clothes more times than Mariah Carey does at a concert. He goes from wearing PJs to a fetching jazz cat outfit to a full suit and then finds time to change again on the drive to Chicago into a white t-shirt and leather jacket" (via Rocket Geeks). Where do these clothes come from?
And finally, perhaps most suspiciously of all: Cameron's dad is the kind of guy to spend a ton of money on high-end luxury cars ... but he stores them in an unlocked garage that his teenage son can easily access? Okay, John Hughes. Okay.
