Hillary Lindsey: The Country Songwriter Is Worth More Than You Think
Country artist Hillary Lindsey is largely considered one of the best songwriters in Nashville. The acclaimed singer-songwriter was born to a musical family in Washington, Ga. Her father was a drummer, and her grandfather used to play a pump organ while she was growing up, according to Sounds Like Nashville. Inspired by a conversation she overheard about her best friends' parents getting divorced, Lindsey penned her first song at just 10 years old. She told Sounds Like Nashville, "As I got older, it turned into me having a crush on a boy that didn't like me. Then I would write songs for my girlfriends who also had crushes on boys that didn't like them. That's how the writing started."
After Nashville session player Buddy Blackmon heard one of Lindsey's original songs, he pushed her to attend the famous Belmont University, where she realized that songwriting could be a viable career. While studying at Belmont, Lindsey frequently recorded her music on cassette tapes and even had one of her recordings passed to someone at Famous Music Publishing without her knowledge. In the 2000s, Hillary Lindsey wrote her first No. 1 hit, "Blessed," for country singer Martina McBride, as noted by Sounds Like Nashville. Lindsey is also credited with helping to launch American Idol singer Carrie Underwood's career after she co-wrote her smash hit "Jesus, Take the Wheel," which has been certified multi-platinum and won a Grammy. In addition to boosting Underwood's country music career, Lindsey has also written chart-topping tracks for Little Big Town and Lady Gaga.
Over the years, Lindsey has been nominated for many awards for her songwriting talents. After winning a Grammy and an Academy of Country Music award for "Jesus, Take the Wheel," she won a second Grammy for writing Little Big Town's "Girl Crush," as well as the ACM Award for Songwriter of the Year in 2020 (via Rolling Stone).
