Here's What Avril Lavigne's Tattoos Really Mean

At one point or another, almost everyone wanted to be pop-punk princess Avril Lavigne. The Canadian singer-songwriter first made waves with her debut album, "Let Go," in 2002. Instantly, everyone fell for her angsty, punk ballads. Soon after, she released another hit album, "Under My Skin," with songs we all still jam to such as "My Happy Ending" and "Don't Tell Me." Then the punk rocker turned into a punk princess, wowing audiences with her new pink hair and girly clothing. Since then, she has continuously made hit after hit for nearly two decades. Her most popular songs to date include "Sk8er Boi," "Complicated," "Girlfriend," "Hot," and "Here's to Never Growing Up" (via Biography).

From being linked to the cutest beaus and rocking out for decades, Lavigne has pretty much seen and done it all already. However, tragedy struck in 2014 when she was diagnosed with Lyme disease, according to People magazine. Afterwards, she went through a grueling recovery but is back to making music. Her newest song with new boyfriend Mod Sun, called "Flames," is already making waves (via YouTube).

Now the pop punk princess has hit songs, big houses, and a whole bunch of cool tattoos.

Avril Lavigne has multiple star tattoos all over her body

So Avril Lavigne is already a star in everyone's hearts, but did you know she has a bunch of stars tattooed on her body? They're all different sizes and colors, with the most well-known being the one sketched on her left wrist. This one is highly significant because this was her first tattoo in honor of her first album, "Let Go." According to Steal Her Style, Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody, who co-wrote the hit ballad "Nobody's Home," got a matching tattoo of this with her.

Now on her right elbow is a black star that actually had to be redone three times. The first time, it was originally done in blue ink, then she got an outline of it with a close friend, then filled it in again with black. The same thing happened with the star tattoo on her upper back. However, she does have one small blue star on her left calf, outlined in black.

A peculiar little tattoo pattern of hers is the small red star which turns her red moles into a constellation. The last star tattoo is a very large, outlined one on her hip accompanied by a smaller version next to it.

Some of Avril Lavigne's tattoos include her favorite word

Avril Lavigne has a wide range of tattoos, some of the most unconventional being the two profanity-laced ones. In 2010, she got the F-bomb tatted on her ribcage, and in an interview with Inked Magazine, she told her fans something interesting. "My favorite tattoo is this one. It's my favorite word!" (via StarTribune). She also got the phrase "F You" on her middle finger as a cheeky hint to the haters.

Some smaller tattoos include a music note on her right wrist and a safety pin on her neck that she got back in 2010. At the time, she tweeted to her fans, "It comes in handy all the time, it can hurt you, but at the same time keep you together, safety first!" (via Idolator). Near her left elbow, Lavigne got the words Abbey Dawn tattooed in honor of the nickname her father would call her when she was a kid. It's also the name of her iconic clothing line that launched in 2008 (via Steal Her Style).

Underneath her Abbey Dawn ink is a skull-and-crossbones tattoo. However, in 2013, she got the edgy tattoo covered up with a cupcake in honor of her hit song, "Hello Kitty" (via Steal Her Style).

She has a lot of matching tattoos with ex-boyfriends

Like Noah Cyrus, Lavigne has a lot of tattoos dedicated to and matching her ex-boyfriends'.

From 2010 to 2012, Lavigne was dating reality star Brody Jenner, and they got quite a few tats together — one of which being the roman numerals "XXV," the number 25, on her right elbow. The couple got matching tattoos of this in honor of Avril's 25th birthday. Next, Avril ended up getting the name "Brody" permanently inked on her ribcage, while Jenner got one that reads "Avril." They also got a small lightning bolt together (via BodyArtGuru).

From 2004 to 2010, Avril Lavigne was happily with musician Deryck Whibley, and the young lovers were everywhere. Like young love, you think it'll last forever, but sometimes it doesn't. However, their tattoos together will last forever. In honor of her then-husband, Avril got the initial D surrounded by a pink heart on her right wrist. Along with that, the couple got matching "30" tattoos in honor of Whibley turning 30 years old. However, since they're still good friends to this day, the matching tattoos don't bother them (via BodyArtGuru).

In 2018, Lavigne carried out a brief relationship with Phillip Sarofim. The two commemorated their time together with matching, traditional-style heart tattoos in April 2018 (via Steal Her Style).

Avril Lavigne has a half-sleeve with multiple stylish tattoos

Avril Lavigne's biggest tattoos to date is on her left forearm, a half-sleeve. The large scripted tattoo reads "La Vie en Rose / Vivre le moment présent," which is the French phrase for "Life in Pink / Living in the moment." So there's an adorable story behind this one. According to Pretty Designs, she got the tattoo with her former husband, Chad Kroeger, before they started dating. They originally met while collaborating on a song, and Lavigne was shocked that he didn't have any tattoos. So they immediately got inked together. Avril originally got "La vie en Rose" and Chad got "Vivre le moment présent." But when they got together, Lavigne added "Vivre le moment présent" to match with her then-husband. Next to the script tattoo is a black and white rose tattoo, the meaning of which has never been disclosed.

In 2017, she got a few stylish, traditional pieces for her forearm. One is a gothic-style cross tattoo from artist Michael Kortez, to show her faith in God. Along with that, she got a switchblade knife near the two (via BodyArtGuru).

Now on her other forearm is a line of symbols, which she also got in 2017. From top to bottom, it's the Libra sign, the alchemy symbol for air, and the symbol for Venus. These all signify Avril Lavigne's birthday, in the coolest possible way (via Steal Her Style).
