Having clogged pores and blackheads can be a huge stressor on anyone. People who have blackheads that are visible oftentimes feel self-conscious and uncomfortable. Blackheads are a type of acne, but unlike typical acne, it's noninflammable, so it's a bit easy to regulate and handle (via Healthline). Some people try to exfoliate, while others try face masks, but there are those who try blackhead strips to clean out their pores.

Pore strips attach to your skin, sit there for a few minutes, and when you rip them off, they clear out your pores and bring out blackheads (via NBC). While they are effective in the short term and get out those pesky blackheads, pore strips can actually cause more harm than good. Experts say that pore strips only work for a short time and don't deal with the real issue behind blackheads, which are large pores and overactive sweat glands (via Byrdie). They can also cause adverse reactions in individuals with sensitivities to adhesive.

If you're someone who has a lot of blackheads, luckily there are other ways to take care of them. Instead of using pore strips, some experts suggest blackhead-specific masks. Dr. Shah, who goes by @dermdoctor on TikTok, revealed that there is a better way to take care of blackheads.

Dr. Shah shared a video that has been viewed over 3 million times and showcases exactly what type of masks works best for blackhead build-up. In the video, he notes that The Ordinary Salicylic Acid Mask works well on clogged pores. You apply the mask to dry skin the same way you'd use a pore strip — layer it over your nose and leave on for 10 minutes. Then, rinse off with water. Dr. Shah says to do this once a week for best results (via TikTok).

If you're interested in trying this doctor-approved alternative, you can grab The Ordinary Salicylic Acid Mask from Ulta, Sephora, or The Ordinary website.
