How Naomi Osaka's Latest Clothing Collaboration Is Making A Statement

Naomi Osaka, queen of the tennis court, is now beginning to conquer the fashion world. Osaka is collaborating with legendary denim brand Levi's to produce a limited edition collection featuring four upcycled denim pieces, per People. Inspired by her Japanese heritage, the star piece of the collection is a denim kimono ($380) with a corresponding obi, which is a Japanese sash tied above the natural waistline. "I always loved wearing kimonos when I was a kid. So, to be able to do it in denim felt really different and a bit unexpected," Osaka explained in a press release (via People).

There are two denim shorts available in the collection, including the knee-length "lace-up shorts" ($150) and light-wash "crystal fringe shorts" ($250). Another standout piece from the collection is a feminine take on the trucker jacket — a denim bustier top with lace-up detail in the back ($180). "The sustainability aspect was super important to me. And I love that every piece in the collection has been recycled or repurposed from old stock," Osaka added in the press release. Jen Sey, Levi's brand president, told The New York Times, "She's the first professional tennis player we've worked with, but for us, she rises above that. She's such a powerful voice, the way she's encouraged others to speak out about equality. She's outspoken. That's what we like about her. There's no point in partnering with someone if you're just going to tell them what to do."

Inside the tennis star's love for fashion

In the past, Naomi Osaka has had collaborations with Nike and Adeam, per People. She has also been featured in Louis Vuitton ads and in Levi's 2021 "Beauty of Becoming" series that profiled the journeys of celebrities like Willow and Jaden Smith, as well as activists like disability rights advocate Haben Girma. While the public knows about Osaka's talent and passion for tennis, there are other hidden talents she enjoys. One of those is fashion design. "When we were little, me and my sister used to take car rides and draw for hours and hours on end. We would have little fashion design battles and have my dad pick the winner," Osaka narrated in a campaign video with Levi's.

The upcoming Levi's collaboration seems to be a promising start for Osaka. Osaka told People, "I'd like to start my own brand one day, probably together with my sister," adding, "But for now I'm loving collab'ing with some great designers and learning the craft and the business." Looks like Osaka will continue to serve us grand slam looks. And, while "love" may be a bad thing in tennis, you will love the upcoming Naomi Osaka x Levi's collection in all the right ways. The collection will be available August 24 in some stores and on the Levi's app. Just make sure to mark it down on your calendar so you can shop for denim pieces that will help you ace your next brunch look.
