What Your Eyebrow Piercing Says About You

Body piercing has been part of human civilization for centuries. Archaeologists say that the practice of body piercings dates back at least 5,000 years, as the remains of the oldest mummies from Ancient Egypt were found to be wearing earrings. While the practice of body piercing has been fairly common in all parts of the world, the Western world saw a rise in its popularity after World War II (via Almost Famous Piercing).

Since ancient times, piercings have carried different meanings for different groups of people (via Tribu). People get various parts of their bodies pierced — including ears, nose, eyebrows, tongue, nipples, chin, and more — for religious or spiritual reasons. For others, piercings have other meanings or uses, including sexual pleasure, aesthetic value, cultural practice, or even rebellion.

Like other types of body piercings, the trend of getting your eyebrow pierced is also becoming quite common these days. While it is largely considered a fashion trend for many people out there, it could also have some meaning. What's more, it might reveal certain things about your personality.

What does your eyebrow piercing reveal about your personality?

Speaking about the Western world, getting one's eyebrow pierced is still a relatively new trend that gained popularity somewhere around the 1970s (via Almost Famous Piercing). While you might have decided to get your brow pierced to channel your favorite style icon, it signifies that you have a tough personality. However, being tough could be perceived both positively and negatively.

According to Her, if you have a pierced eyebrow, you might give off "stern vibes," which could make others believe that you're aggressive. On the other hand, certain people would just perceive you as someone cool and stylish. In fact, many celebrities have had their eyebrow pierced and totally rocked their look without giving off "aggressive" vibes.

For instance, Pentatonix vocalist Kirstin Maldonado has a double eyebrow piercing, while singer and songwriter Keyshia Cole has a piercing on the tip of her right eyebrow. Similarly, American singer Fergie used to wear a curved barbell in her right eyebrow and pulled off the look perfectly (via Steal Her Style).

Things to know before getting your eyebrow pierced

If you are planning to get your eyebrow pierced, there are certain things you should bear in mind before making a decision. Firstly, eyebrow piercings tend to leave a scar on the skin. However, they are mostly unnoticeable due to their tiny size (via Healthline). Moreover, since they are surface piercings, your body might not accept them, or the piercing could even migrate. Therefore, they require special care (via Byrdie).

"Eyebrow piercings require extra care and attention because they are especially susceptible to rejection and migration. Disrupting the healing process increases the risks of rejection and migration," New York-based dermatologist Blair Murphy-Rose told the outlet.

Migration and rejection mostly occur when you choose the wrong type of jewelry for your piercing or if you treat your fresh piercing carelessly. However, the procedure of getting your eyebrow pierced is fairly easy and is comparatively less painful than other types of piercings. Once pierced, it could take about three to four months for it to completely heal (via Byrdie).
