General Hospital Love Triangles That Fans Couldn't Get Enough Of

What would soap operas be without love stories and love triangles? Romance taken to fantasy levels is what gets people tuning in day and in and day out year after year. Fans see a relationship from when eyes first meet till death do them part at times, but not without oodles of drama in between. That drama often takes the form of a triangle with one person in the middle of two people who love them or two people they love. And nobody can seem to make up their minds — except maybe the fans who band together in fun warring factions on social media to promote their favorite pair.

On "General Hospital," love triangles that go back to the show's late 1970s and 1980s heyday, can still be seen playing out in some way today — at least with some of the same characters on the screen, according to Screen Rant. With some, it's obvious who the one true pairing should be and with others, all three characters are sympathetic, which makes the triangle that much more intriguing.

Laura is married to Scotty and drawn to Luke

Perhaps the most famous pairing in "General Hospital" history (as well as soap history) which seems to be coming to an official end in January of 2022, is Luke and Laura. Played by Tony Geary and Genie Francis, this pair became a cultural phenomenon in the 1980s and graced the cover of Newsweek. Their November 1981 wedding is still the most-watched episode in soap opera history, as of this writing. But many forget that when Laura met Luke, she was already married to Scotty Baldwin (Kin Shriner), and when Luke raped Laura but the show still wanted to pair them, that rape was re-written as a seduction — of a married woman.

When Luke and Laura did finally wed, it was Scotty who crashed the wedding and caught the bouquet, still smarting that he lost his wife to such a man (via Soap Hub). However, it is also Scotty who is still there for Laura as a friend in 2022, while Luke, who Laura hasn't been married to for years, was just presumed dead after spending the last few years conning people in Amsterdam (via Soap Hub).

Sam thinks she's married to Jason but it's really Drew

Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) fell in love on "General Hospital" back in 2003 and finally married in 2011, only to have Jason presumed dead by 2012. Sam forged on raising their son Danny alone, but of course had a few romances before a man came to town calling himself Jake Doe (Billy Miller) with no memory of who he was. That man also had to have plastic surgery after a car accident and Sam never knew who he looked like before the accident. Eventually, she learned he looked just like Jason and soon all of Jason's memories came flooding back, so Sam had her Jason back and they wed again.

But whoops! That wasn't Jason. The real Jason was being held captive in a Russian clinic so drugged up that he could barely move, according to Celeb Dirty Laundry. With Ava Jerome's (Maura West) help, Jason finally managed to escape and returned to Port Charles and Sam. By then, Sam had another child with this man she thought was Jason, but turned out to be Jason's long-lost twin, Drew Cain. For a while, Sam was torn between the two men and so were fans, but ultimately, Sam chose the original Jason, according to Soaps In Depth. She eventually dumped him after Drew was presumed dead but now Jason is presumed dead and Drew is back with Cameron Mathison playing him (via Soaps.com), so anything can still happen.

Sonny and Jax battle it out over Brenda

Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Brenda Barrett (Vanessa Marcil) were already in love and had broken up several times by the time Jasper "Jax" Jacks (Ingo Rademacher) came into the picture and tried his best to sweep Brenda off her feet. Brenda tried to resist and came close to reuniting with Sonny, but when she learned he was going to marry Lily Rivera (Lilly Melgar) because she was carrying his child, Brenda married Jax at the moment a car blew up killing Lily and her unborn child, per Soaps.com.

During the ensuing years, Jax and Sonny battled it out for Brenda's affections and she did end up marrying Sonny at one point, only to choose life in Europe away from both men (via Soaps In Depth). They went on without her and eventually battled it out over Carly (Laura Wright), who they also both married (via Soaps In Depth). Jax's most recent love was Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros), someone Sonny is falling for as of this writing (via Soaps.com), so it's clear these two soap opera men have the same taste in soap opera women.
