The couple had been together for over 16 years, making the news of their separation especially shocking (via Today). Now, rumors are swirling that Momoa may be involved with someone from his "Game of Thrones" past.

Fans are looking back at Jason Momoa's Instagram posts

After Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet announced their divorce, the internet began buzzing over the idea that Momoa might be involved with one of his past "Game of Thrones" co-stars. According to MeAww, fans are putting the pieces together that they believe point to a blooming romance between Momoa and Emilia Clarke.

The pair reached peak fame when playing their respective roles of Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen on the hit HBO show. They were husband and wife on-screen, but could the actors be more than just friends following the end of the show and Momoa's divorce?

Fans have done some digging and found a photo that Momoa posted of himself and Clarke on Instagram in August 2021 with a sentimental caption (via Tyla). In the photo, Clarke is sitting on Momoa's lap, and the two are grinning widely for the camera.

"MOON OF MY LIFE," the caption read. "you are wonderful love u forever @emilia_clarke." ("Moon of my life" is what Khal Drogo called Daenerys on the show.) In the comments, fans were, of course, sounding off. One wrote, "Friends in love. I hope you follow ur heart," while another said, "Omg u guys are like perfect!"

Fans also found an interview Momoa did on "The Graham Norton Show" in 2019, where he said he makes an effort to visit Clarke every time he's in the United Kingdom.

Emilia Clarke has spoken highly of Jason Momoa

In 2019, Emilia Clarke appeared on an episode of Dax Shephard's podcast "Armchair Expert," where she praised her "Game of Thrones" co-star Jason Momoa for his actions during a particularly difficult scene they had to shoot together.

When the series began filming, Clarke was only 23 and struggled with the idea of filming nude scenes. She said that Momoa helped her through the situation by making sure she was OK between takes.

"He took care of me in an environment I didn't know I needed to be taken care of ... He was so kind and considerate and cared about me as a human being," Clarke said (via Yahoo!).

She explained that, between takes, or as soon as the scene had wrapped, Momoa would immediately call someone over to bring Clarke a bathrobe so she could cover herself up. She considers the actor's kindness one of the main things that helped her through the nerve-wracking time.

The two have maintained this level of mutual admiration over the years and appear to have grown closer since Momoa's departure from the show.

Jason Momoa was there for the actress through her health battles

When Emilia Clarke revealed during a candid essay for The New Yorker that she had suffered two life-threatening aneurysms during her time filming "Game of Thrones," fans were completely stunned. Thankfully, the actor recovered fully from these episodes, and it appears as though Jason Momoa was by her side through this difficult time.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2019, Momoa was asked about Clarke's powerful essay and her health struggles. His reply offered a glimpse into the deep connection the two share.

"I've kind of been a part of that whole situation for a very long time, so we've had so many scares and trying to find the right way to come out and help," Momoa said. "I'm very sad, because we almost lost her the first time. So, I love her to bits and she's here and she's going to do great things with it and teach the world."

Perhaps the two are just really close friends — or maybe there's the potential for something more. Only time will tell.
