The Bold And The Beautiful Relationship Timeline: Hope And Liam

When you think of Hope Logan Spencer and Liam Spencer (Scott Clifton) on "The Bold and the Beautiful," you can't help but also think of Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood), as Liam has waffled back and forth between the two women for years. However, Liam is married to Hope at the time of writing, and has managed to stay married to her for about two years. As for Steffy, she is wed to Dr. John "Finn" Finnegan (Tanner Novlan), and seems to be happy with him.

Liam has had two Hopes through the years, as when the pair first met, Hope was played by Kim Matula, with Annika Noelle taking over the role in 2018, where she's carved out a niche for herself in an emotionally draining story in which Hope believed her baby had died at birth. From sweepingly dramatic European moments to reunions right on a Los Angeles rooftop, Hope and Liam have all the elements of a classic soap opera couple in the spirit of the 1980s, when love was never in doubt, except for one difference: Liam may never make up his mind regarding who he truly wants.

Hope and Liam meet, but Steffy gets in the way

When Liam Spencer first arrived in "The Bold and the Beautiful's" fictional version of Los Angeles, he didn't know who his father was, but he was determined to find out. He soon learned Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) was the man he was looking for, and assumed his last name while casually dating Amber Moore (Adrienne Frantz), who claimed she was having his child (via Soaps in Depth).

When the baby turned out not to be Liam's, he met Hope Logan, daughter of Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) and her ex-son-in-law, Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan). It turned out that Hope had an odd upbringing with a string of fathers, just like Liam had an odd upbringing not knowing who his father was. Hope and Liam bonded and were falling in love when Liam ended up playing hero for Steffy when she nearly drowned. Steffy was immediately smitten with the young man who saved her and decided she wanted Liam for herself, per Soaps in Depth.

Liam Spencer's signature waffling begins

The fact that Hope Logan Spencer wanted to remain a virgin until her wedding night shouldn't have caused problems for Liam Spencer, but it did, and Steffy Forrester did not care. She was there for Liam, and she had no problems sleeping with him, so that's what she did. Hope was heartbroken, but Steffy was quite charming and even got Liam to marry her in an Aspen wedding that Hope was forced to watch (Soaps.com).

Liam later learned that Steffy had worked with his dad to ensure Hope didn't interrupt his wedding. A furious Liam got an annulment from Steffy and decided to move on with Hope, but things weren't as simple as they seemed (via Soaps in Depth). The pair married in an Italian wedding. However, upon returning to the U.S., they learned their marriage was invalid. So, another wedding was in store in L.A. And, Liam being Liam, he arrived at the wedding on the back of Steffy's motorcycle drunk, prompting Hope to call the whole thing off.

Liam returns to Steffy, but it doesn't last

Since Hope Logan Spencer broke up with him, Liam Spencer needed someone, and Steffy Forrester was there. She even got pregnant — and they were thrilled — but then she miscarried and left town to emotionally recover. Liam thought he could easily win Hope back, but he now had competition: his own brother. Yes, another one of Bill's long-lost sons arrived in town, and Wyatt Spencer (Darin Brooks) was smitten with the lovely and fair Hope (via Soaps in Depth).

So, Liam jetted off to Paris to find Steffy, and she told him he should be with Hope because she learned she was unable to have more children, and she wanted Liam to be with a woman who could one day give him a family. So, that is what Liam did, but he had to win her back from Wyatt. So, Hope decided she had to date both of them and then make up her mind which brother was the man of her dreams.

She eventually chose Liam, but ended up marrying Wyatt because Liam didn't meet her at a designated spot in Italy to declare his love. Little did either of them know, it was Wyatt's overbearing mother, Quinn Fuller (Rena Sofer), who made sure Liam never got there in time. Hope soon became pregnant with Liam's baby, but when she miscarried, she also needed to emotionally recover. So, she left town just like Steffy did, but Liam wasn't alone for long because Steffy ultimately returned.

Liam marries Steffy once again, Hope returns

With Hope Logan Spencer across the pond and Steffy Forrester back from Europe, what was Liam Spencer to do but be with Steffy once again. Of course, Liam had to have amnesia first, and Steffy had to briefly wed Wyatt. Still, eventually, Steffy and Liam tied the knot once more and were thrilled when it turned out she could have kids — and was pregnant. This was after Liam kissed Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) when they were stuck in a building collapse, leading a heartbroken Steffy to have a one-night stand with Liam's dad, Bill Spencer. When Liam found the paternity test she'd done that proved he was indeed her baby's father, he was furious she even had to take a test like that, and left her. However, Hope returned, so Liam wasn't alone for long.

Hope returned in the form of "The Bold and the Beautiful" star Annika Noelle, and quickly decided she wanted Liam back (Soaps.com). After Steffy gave birth to a little girl named Kelly and nearly reconciled with his wife, Hope made sure that didn't happen. She got Liam to sleep with her and became pregnant, so Liam officially divorced Steffy and married Hope as Liam anxiously awaited the birth of his second daughter.

Liam marries Hope and everything goes south

While Steffy Forrester decided she didn't need Liam Spencer anymore and settled into life as a single mom, she did decide she wanted another baby so that Kelly would be raised with a sister the same age, just like she was raised with her late twin, Phoebe Forrester. She planned to adopt one, as Liam and Hope Spencer awaited the birth of their daughter. Just before her due date, Hope arranged a babymoon trip for her and Liam on nearby Catalina Island, and went into labor before Liam could get there (via Soaps.com). When Liam finally arrived, she tearfully told them their baby was stillborn. Together, they mourned Beth.

What they didn't know is that the doctor who delivered the baby kidnapped her and sold her to Steffy's mom, Taylor Hayes (then played by Hunter Tylo), telling her everything was legal for Steffy to adopt the newborn. So, Steffy began raising Kelly with a little girl she named Phoebe, who she didn't know was Hope and Liam's baby. She allowed Hope to visit the baby as she mourned, and Hope grew attached. However, she also felt she needed to be alone, and divorced Liam.

Liam and Hope find their baby and marry again

Steffy Forrester declared Liam Spencer a father figure in "Phoebe's" life just as Hope Spencer nearly married Steffy's brother, Thomas Forrester (Matthew Atkinson), per Soaps in Depth. As she grew attached to his son, Douglas (Henry Joseph Samiri), she used him as a replacement for the baby she lost. It was Douglas who overheard the truth about Steffy's adopted baby and the little boy simply told Liam that "Beth is Phoebe and Phoebe is Beth" in one of the most adorable moments soaps have seen in a long time. Liam eventually believed him and got the proof he needed to go to Hope.

That's when he found Hope on the Forrester Creations rooftop trying to get away from an obsessed Thomas, and told her that their baby was alive. They reunited, took their baby home as Steffy cried in heartbreak, and remarried. In 2022, Liam and Hope remain married and raising both Beth and Douglas, but that doesn't mean Liam didn't slip up in late 2020, having a one-night stand with Steffy that resulted in another paternity test. Steffy's new man, Finn, was the father, Hope forgave Liam, and everyone is living happily ever after, at least for now.
