Not only did he win the best actor award for his role in "King Richard," but he also caused a scene when he slapped comedian Chris Rock during the live telecast on March 27, 2022. While some viewers mistakenly believed the clash was scripted, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences verified the encounter was real when it publicly condemned Smith's actions and announced a formal inquiry has been opened, according to The New York Times.
Smith also took to Instagram to apologize to Rock, who reportedly declined to press assault charges against the actor, per CBS News. Smith wrote, "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night's Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable."
While some viewers felt the incident tarnished Smith's good-guy reputation, the actor also had many supporters, including one who might surprise some — his ex-wife, Sheree Zampino.

Will Smith's ex-wife Sheree Zampino posted an image to her Instagram page that shows her posing with the actor and his Academy Award following the March 27 Oscars ceremony. The photo also featured the caption, "Epic Night! Congratulations again — when 1 wins we all win! #family1st." In addition to the photo, Zampino also shared a video that showed her watching the ceremony with Smith's family, including Jaden and Willow Smith — the children he shares with wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
According to People, Smith and Zampino were married from 1992 to 1995 and share a 29-year-old son together, Trey Smith. In the September 22, 2021 episode of her web series "Red Table Talk," Pinkett Smith said she and Zampino had a "real beautiful sisterhood" that took almost 20 years to develop.
In December 2021, it was announced that Zampino was set to join the 12th season of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," according to E! News. No air date has been announced at the time of writing, but Zampino is certain to have lots to talk about when the show eventually airs.
