Winona Ryder Reveals Why She Never Got Married

Though Winona Ryder has undergone many transformations since her acting debut at 14, she's been a mainstay in Hollywood as a string of iconic '80s movies showed off her chops in both horror and melodrama. Classics like "Heathers" and "Beetlejuice" led to co-starring roles in '90s movies like "Mermaids" with Cher and "Edward Scissorhands" with her former fiancé Johnny Depp. Then came a sequence of film adaptations of famous literature, and unforgettable roles in 1994's "Little Women" and 1999's "Girl Interrupted" (per IMDb).

Over the past two decades, Ryder has stayed booked and busy, while taking some time for herself in between projects. She told The Edit (via ET), "I was working a lot [in the '90s] and I needed to slow down. It's so important to have a life outside the industry, to not look to it to validate you as a human being."

Fans are currently loving Ryder as Joyce Byers — Will's string light obsessed, highly meme-able mom — on Season 4 of Netflix's "Stranger Things." And though the world has gotten to know Ryder through her filmography, her private life has rarely entered the public eye, except through her high-profile relationships with Johnny Depp, from 1990 to 1993, and Matt Damon from 1998 to 2000.

Her relationship history has revolved around monogamy

Winona Ryder opened up to The Edit about her dating history and what it means for her future. "I'm a serial monogamist. I was single for a while and dating and I just didn't know how to do it!"

The actress's most well-known relationship — and breakup — was with Johnny Depp, who she met in 1990 and got engaged to when she was 19, per People. She recounted to The Edit that it was her first experience with heartbreak. And the breakup also left a mark on Depp, literally, in the form of his "Winona forever" tattoo transformed into "Wino forever."

In a 2016 Interview with Time — conducted shortly after news broke that Amber Heard was accusing her ex-husband Depp of assault — Ryder told the outlet it was difficult for her to absorb the allegations due to her history with Depp. "It was a long time ago, but we were together for four years, and it was a big relationship for me. Imagine if someone you dated when you were — I was 17 when I met him — was accused of that. It's just shocking."

Now, Ryder appears to have found long-term love — she's reportedly been in a relationship with fashion designer Scott Mackinlay Hahn since 2011 (per ET).

Winona Ryder is now 'happily with someone'

Winona Ryder's beau Scott Mackinlay Hahn is a success in his own right, as the CEO of a sustainable clothing brand, Loomstate, per Time. He serves on the Sustainability Steering Committee for the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and sits on the board of the Council for Textile Recycling, a nonprofit connecting sustainability efforts between businesses and manufacturers, according to Cradle to Cradle.

Is marriage in the cards for this successful couple? Not according to The Edit's 2016 interview with Ryder. She told the outlet, "Marriage? I don't know. I'd rather never have been married than been divorced a few times. Not that there's anything wrong with divorce, but I don't think I could do it if that was a possibility" (via ET).

She also explained that her parents' solid 45-year relationship has influenced her decision-making and standards when it comes to walking down the aisle. However, she did share subtle news about her current relationship with Scott Mackinlay, saying, "I've been happily with someone for quite a while now."
