Taylor Swift Chose Travis Over 2026 Emmys Red Carpet — But Still Gave Fans Award Show Surprise
Ever since it was announced that the Emmys would take place on the same day as the Kansas City Chiefs' first regular season game, fans have wondered which event Taylor Swift would choose to attend. After all, "The Eras Tour: The Final Show" was nominated for an award, and Swift's friend, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" star Mariska Hargitay was hosting the show. But Swift is also fresh off her marriage to Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The celebrity couple celebrated their nuptials at Madison Square Garden on July 3, 2026 and have kept a relatively low profile ever since. In the end, it seems the pop star chose football over the red carpet, as cameras spotted her sitting alongside Tom Cruise and cheering on Kelce from the Arrowhead Stadium stands. But that doesn't mean she didn't make any appearance at the Emmys. Swifties got a fun surprise when the singer popped up in a pre-recorded sketch during the show's broadcast.
The four-minute-long video was set in the world of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Hargitay plays Captain Olivia Benson as she tries to answer the question of whether or not the "betty" hitmaker will attend the Emmys. Hargitay-as-Benson goes through all the hints that could signal Swift will be there and ties them into a range of Emmy-nominated shows. It was a clever play on how much she loves providing Easter eggs for her fans — just look at how many Swift dropped during "The Eras Tour." Then, two minutes into the skit, the lady herself unexpectedly shows up. Swift isn't there purely as herself though, instead playing an unnamed, suit-wearing, rookie cop discussing the case at hand.
Taylor Swift may have dropped Easter eggs in the Emmys sketch
Swifties have gotten to work trying to decode the hints and clues that they reckon are definitely hiding within Taylor Swift and Mariska Hargitay's Emmys sketch. The most notable moment that fans are latching onto is when the pop star, in character, says, "I think what we're looking for is hidden right in front of our eyes," before turning directly to the camera to intone: "Saccharide. Aries. From the vine. To the north or to the south."
As one impressed fan enthused on X, "This is the best thing I've ever seen and I can't wait for the smart Swifties to decipher it." Some X users were convinced that when Swift breaks the fourth wall, she was referencing vault tracks or new releases. Other people just loved seeing Swift wearing her wedding ring and engagement ring stack. Fans also appreciated the meta moment of Swift carrying her famous cat Olivia Benson, who is named after Mariska Hargitay's iconic character. We'll have to see whether she cameos on "SVU" in the future for real.
