Prince Harry & Meghan Markle's Exes Are Thriving Without Them
As people discuss the love lives of British royals, it's hard not to be curious about the ones who got away. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, got married in May 2018 at the ages of 33 and 36. Like his older brother William, Prince of Wales, Harry had more than one girlfriend during his bachelorhood and a couple of rumored flings. Harry's exes, Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas, impacted him the most, and he's on such good terms with them that they were guests at the royal wedding. The prince dated Davy on and off from 2004 to 2011, and he was with Bonas from 2012 to 2014.
Meghan also had an eventful love life before Harry swept her off her feet. She dated ex-husband Trevor Engelson for 7 years before marrying him in 2011. They separated in 2013 and finalized their divorce the following year. She was linked to Cory Vitiello during her "Suits" days in Canada, but the two stopped dating in 2016, the year she met Harry.
Although one of Harry's exes could have become a royal, and one of Meghan's exes could have watched her do more with her acting career, things seemed to have worked out for the best. The duke and duchess' former partners are doing pretty well for themselves out of the spotlight that Harry and Meghan constantly find themselves in.
Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas were relieved to leave the royal spotlight
When Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, took a gap year before the military, he met his ex, Chelsy Davy, in Cape Town, South Africa. He recalled the relief he felt about Davy's indifference to his royal blood in his memoir "Spare." "I'd always wanted to know what it might be like to meet a woman and not have her eyes widen at the mention of my title, but instead to widen them myself, using my mind, my heart. With Chelsy that seemed a real possibility," the prince wrote (via Town & Country).
Davy worked in law during the latter part of their relationship, but she later founded her business Aya Jewels in 2016. Davy, who was born in Zimbabwe, also established Aya Africa Travel in 2020. She met her husband, hotelier and wedding venue director Sam Cutmore-Scott, in 2019. Cutmore-Scott and Davy had a son named Leo four months before tying the knot in May 2022.
A year after his split from Davy, Harry met actor and model Cressida Bonas at a music festival through his cousin, Princess Eugenie. According to royal expert Robert Lacey, Bonas was "completely spooked" by the attention Prince William and Kate Middleton received when they took their baby, Prince George, to New Zealand (via Marie Claire). She got roles in the period dramas "Doctor Thorne" and "Tulip Fever" afterwards; her latest movie, "Touchdown," came out in 2024. The celebrity married estate agent Henry Wentworth-Stanley in 2020 before having their son Wilbur in 2022 and their daughter Delphina in 2025.
Trevor Engelson and Cory Vitello found true love around the same time as Meghan
When she was 23 years old, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, met film producer Trevor Engelson. The details of how they met are unknown, but both parties had the entertainment industry in common. Meghan even featured in one of Engelson's most famous movies, "Remember Me," starring Robert Pattinson. The former couple's destination wedding in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, was made up of a 15-minute ceremony and a celebration lasting at least four days. They later divorced due to "irreconcilable differences" unknown to the public. However, a close source told Women's Day that Meghan moved to Canada for "Suits" not long before the wedding. "Trevor was based in LA while Meghan was in Toronto, a five-hour flight away. It was a very difficult way to start married life," they said (via Life & Style).
Engelson produced over 20 shows and movies since separating from Meghan in 2013, including the FX show "Snowfall" and a TV adaptation of "Heathers." He proposed to nutritionist and heiress Tracey Kurland the year the Sussexes wed and remarried his wealthy wife the year Prince Archie was born. Engelson and Kurland have two daughters, Ford, born in 2021, and Sienna, born in 2022.
The duchess met Canadian chef and restaurateur Cory Vitiello in 2014 at his old restaurant The Harbord Room. According to a Daily Mail interview with Vitiello's mom Joanne, their relationship got pretty serious within the first year and a half. "I'll just let you know that we were very fond of her. It was serious," Joanne Vitiello recalled. "They were together that length of time. They were living together in the house, and they were in their 30s, so they weren't young kids." The Toronto chef found love with singer Martina Sorbara after his split from Meghan, and the couple welcomed their son Barlow in 2018.
