Prince William Reportedly Opts Out Of Projects Honoring Diana To Avoid Prince Harry Drama

Diana, the former Princess of Wales, died after a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997. Her sons William, Prince of Wales and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex are keeping their mother's legacy of philanthropy and charity work alive. However, they're each doing it in their own way, and they're definitely not working together on projects anymore — the feud between Harry and William has been going on for years. It doesn't seem to show any signs of thawing, even with Harry and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex having moved back to the U.K. for the foreseeable future. Reports are out that William has turned down appearing on TV for any projects related to the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana's death as he doesn't want him and Harry to be "pitted against each other," according to The Times.

It definitely isn't a sign of a truce between the brothers since the anniversary could have been a touching time for a public reunification. However, if nothing else, it does seem as though William doesn't want things to get worse, at least publicly, between the two of them.

For his part, Harry is said to be considering participating in or even making a documentary about his mother for the 30th anniversary of her death. He's reportedly spoken with some family members, including Diana's brother Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, to possibly participate in a project about her. Our guess is that if a Harry-led project does move ahead, we won't be seeing William in it.

Both William, Prince of Wales and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex participated in the ITV documentary "Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy" that came out 20 years after Diana's death. In it, the two talked about happy memories with their mother as well as the challenges they faced in the wake of her unexpected death. One of the sad moments in that 2017 documentary was finding out how much both William and Harry regretted rushing off the phone in what would turn out to be their last call with their mother.

Unnamed sources close to William told The Times that William felt the 20th anniversary project was "a final catharsis," and we could see why he might not want to go through it all again. When the documentary was screened at Kensington Palace in 2017, William said, "we won't speak as openly or publicly about her again ... " (per The Guardian). He seems to be sticking with that sentiment.

Harry and William did work together on the statue of Princess Diana that was installed at Kensington Palace in 2021. That appears to be the last time the brothers collaborated on anything to do with their mother — or anything at all. The two of them reportedly haven't talked since Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in 2022.
