Whether you know her from "Home Improvement," "Baywatch," modeling, or something else entirely, there's no denying Pamela Anderson is a nigh-impeachable pop-culture icon. Still, while Anderson's stunning transformation over the years has largely been defined by fame and fortune, her journey has also often been rife with sadness and tragedy. One of the actor's most harrowing personal struggles began when she was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. Of course, you may be asking why exactly it was so difficult. After all, Hepatitis C is easily treatable. Well, it is now, thanks to modern medical advancements.

But when Anderson first received her diagnosis, the disease was effectively, in her words, a "death sentence." While Hepatitis C has never been outright terminal in and of itself, the disease can cause severe, sometimes even fatal complications if left untreated for too long. It was also not consistently curable until 2013. Worse, the treatments that were available up until that point were notoriously grueling, in addition to having an extremely low success rate. "Back in the late '90s, when I was diagnosed with hepatitis C, there was no cure," Anderson pointed out in her Award of Courage acceptance speech at the amfAR Gala Venezia, during the Venice Film Festival in September 2026 (via People).

"It was a death sentence at the time," she continued, adding that her doctors informed her that she "probably had around 10 years to live," (via Entertainment Weekly). The '90s icon's speech notably came more than 24 years after she went public with her diagnosis. Prior to the discovery of a cure, coming to terms with her illness was anything but easy for the "Baywatch" legend — never mind the fact that its effects still linger today.

Pamela Anderson has been impressively open about her Hepatitis C journey

Pamela Anderson disclosed her Hepatitis C diagnosis in March 2002. In a statement to ABC News the former Playboy model confirmed that she had contracted the disease after sharing a tattoo needle with her ex-husband Tommy Lee (who has since remarried). The actor further alleged that the rocker had never told her that he had the illness himself. For his part, Lee flat-out denied that he had hepatitis C at all. In any case, the fact that she now had a potentially fatal disease was not something Anderson took lightly. During her speech at the Venice Film Festival, she recalled how it greatly impacted her decision-making from that point forward. "It was not fear of death, but fear of what might happen to my young children. It turned my life inside out," the "Barb Wire" star confessed, per EW.

In November 2015, more than a decade after going public, Anderson successfully underwent treatment to rid herself of Hepatitis C forever. "I am CURED!!! — I just found out," she proudly proclaimed in a now-deleted Instagram post (via People). Later that same month, the actor confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that Lee had been cured of the disease too, after undergoing his own treatment the previous year. In fact, "He was always pushing me, 'You got to do this.'" The "Last Showgirl" star still bears the metaphorical scars of the ordeal. "[M]y experience of shame and guilt was also an unconscious journey. It stays with me; it haunts me," she shared in Venice nearly 11 years after being cured. Nevertheless, Anderson stood tall, declaring, "I'm not a victim, I'm a victor."
