Born 50 Years Ago, This Libra Became A Minimalist '90s Style Icon

Think you'd have trouble spotting the future celebrity in this photo? As if! The fact is, Alicia Silverstone looks as fabulous now as she did in this undated Instagram photo featuring her and her best friends "in my Esprit days," as she mused. You might want to sit down for this one, though: Silverstone turns 50 today — October 4, 2026 — and barely seems to have aged since her starring turn as Cher Horowitz in 1995's "Clueless." Although her character was known for her impeccable style (oh, those tartan plaids! The sheer shirt overlays!), Silverstone is much more subdued offscreen. In fact, the actor's minimalist style won her almost as much attention as the mini-skirts and knee socks she sported in the movie.

All throughout the '90s, the "Bugonia" star perfected the art of dressing down without looking frumpy. She was just as likely to arrive at media events in a beige suede jacket and white jeans as an evening gown. Her love of unadorned pantsuits was practically legendary, often opting for black satin or similar looks (seen below left). Even as recently as June 2026, Silverstone returned to her comfort zone for the premiere of "The Invite." Seen below right, Silverstone donned a dark, boxy blazer, pairing it with dark jeans and a black shirt, with barely-there jewelry and makeup.

For Silverstone, aesthetics remain a distant second to ethics. She told Vogue in 2011, "I have some guidelines when it comes to clothes, or anything, really. First, I try to find it used so I'm not creating more waste. If I can't find it used, I'll make sure it's made with an eco material. If I can't find it in either of those categories, I'll buy something regular. But I rarely have to do that."

True to form, Alicia Silverstone gave a cheeky nod to one of her classic "Clueless" moments when she attended the Alaïa runway show at the 2026 Paris Fashion Week wearing one of the designer's dresses. (You'll recall Cher was also notably wearing the brand when she was mugged.) It was a clever move on the actor's part, but not a surprising one. As a Libra, an astrological sign ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty and harmony, Silverstone naturally gravitates toward balanced, coordinated fashion that's pleasing to the eye without seeming too over-the-top.

The former "Baby-Sitters Club" star strives for Libra balance in her personal life, as well. Silverstone quit acting for a time when she needed a break from media reports snickering over her weight. She focused her attention on raising Bear Blu, her son with ex-husband Christopher Jarecki. Bear turned 15 in May 2026, and Silverstone exulted on Instagram, "Being his mom is the most incredible gift." Her Libra passion for peace and natural living no doubt figured into her gentle parenting style, which she outlined in her book, "The Kind Mama." Silverstone espouses a vegan diet, co-sleeping, natural toilet training (i.e., no diapers), and other "kind" practices. (Granted, some of her methods aren't for everyone; the actor caused a stir in 2012 when she revealed her mouth-to-mouth technique of feeding Bear.)

At 50, Silverstone has joined her peers in proving midlife women can still enjoy successful careers, contribute to society, and — oh, yes — look amazing. Her most recent screen appearance was in Netflix's 2025 Christmas rom-com "A Merry Little X-Mas," as a divorced mom who reunites with her ex (and his new girlfriend) for the holidays. Despite ditching her traditional fashion for cozy sweaters and velvet wrap dresses, Silverstone still radiated cool vibes.
