When it comes to dark, twisted roles, Winona Ryder nails the assignment every time. This Hollywood legend has been making scary movies since her teens, and the Scorpio is celebrating her 55th birthday on October 29, 2026.

Ryder had just turned 16 the October before Tim Burton's 1988 film, "Beetlejuice," premiered, where she shot to fame with her breakout role as Lydia Deetz. The dark, gothic teen wasn't too different from Ryder herself. She told Esquire in August 2024, "I was very much like Lydia. They didn't have to do much with me." Ryder's personal style was already very similar to the teenager in the movie, who made friends with the ghosts in her attic. Ryder told the outlet, "My brother found a picture of me taken like a month before that audition. I'd dyed my hair blue-black, I had these crazy short bangs, and I dressed in black."

In a November 2025 photo of her, above, Ryder can still pull off the all-black look with the uneven bangs. Although Ryder has had a stunning transformation over the years, her tendency to go for darker roles has remained the same. She is the queen of fall movies that we love re-watching every year, and it's only fitting that her birthday is right at the peak of spooky season.

Winona Ryder's career shows no signs of stopping after a long break

In the '80s, '90s, and early '00s, Winona Ryder appeared in many creepy, odd, and disturbing movies, including "Heathers," a film where she almost lost the starring role, as well as "Edward Scissorhands," "Dracula," "Alien: Resurrection," "The House of the Spirits," and "Girl, Interrupted." Outside of these horror leaning movies, Ryder was also a staple in cozy fall films, like "Little Women," "The Age of Innocence," and "Autumn in New York." She brought her unique charm to each role, carving out a spot for herself as a quintessential fall movie star, with one timeless film after another.

Her career wasn't always smooth sailing, however, and she has had a tragic, real-life story. She continued to act in various projects that didn't stand out, until she was cast in "Stranger Things" in 2016. Ryder also reprised her role as Lydia in "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" in 2024 and will make a guest appearance in "Wednesday" season 3 in 2027.

Despite her career resurgence, Ryder isn't looking to chase the superstardom she once had in her heyday. "I love my job. But all the stuff that comes with it, the thought of being propelled into the limelight again is not something I sit around and fantasize about, certainly," she told Collider in July 2016. "I'd much rather just do my work, and then go home and read my books and watch movies." Honestly, good for her! That sounds like a great plan for this fall, with a lineup of some of Ryder's best movies in honor of her 55th birthday and her incredible career.
