Hidden Details You Didn't Notice In Doja Cat's Billboard Performance

Doja Cat came to the 2020 Billboard performance ready to play. Of course, we were entranced by her long, white, rhinestone-studded, claw-like nails. Yes, we were stunned by her impeccable, cat-eye make-up and red, red lips. No ifs, ands, or buts about it: We spent more time than we want to admit staring at her perfectly coiffed auburn bob.

And her voice. Doja Cat belted out "Say So" to her virtual audience like we were the only ones in the room. "Day to night to morning, keep with me in the moment," Doja Cat sang. "And we can dance all day around it, If you front then I'll be bouncing, If you want it scream and shout it, babe, Before I leave you dry," she serenaded us, and only us. And she left us dry. "Thanks to Doja for saving the billboard," the whole Twitterverse clapped.

But were you too focused on the lyrics and how good Doja Cat looked to notice the inspiration behind her performance?

Doja Cat was inspired by this Broadway musical

One tour through Doja Cat's Instagram is enough to confirm that her 2020 Billboard Awards get-up was far from the norm. Doja Cat gave up neon pink leather pants and crop tops, she set aside her ripped jeans and long pink locks, she scoffed at her usual leopard-print bikinis. The rapper, pop, R&B, and dancehall phenomenon opted instead for a look reminiscent of 1920s flappers.

Too Fab called it. Billboard confirmed. Doja Cat's performance was one big nod to the Broadway musical, Chicago. With her tap-dance inspired, showgirl choreography (right out of Broadway Choreographer, Bob Fosse's playbook), she exuded a Roxie Heart perhaps more enticing than Rene Zellweger's 2002 Hollywood rendition of her.

Needless to say, Doja Cat's followers went wild. "And that's how you do a performance," celebrated one Billboards Award Twitter follower. "Doja is basically telling the girls to sit ... down she got this from here," concluded another. "Doja Cat got us serrrrrrved," wrote a third, stunned fan.
