Here's What We Know About Sinbad's Recent Stroke
November has been a lousy month, health-wise, especially for the celebrity world. In just two weeks time, Jeopardy!'s Alex Trebek succumbed to pancreatic cancer, Bert Belasco passed away unexpectedly, Hugh Grant revealed his battle with COVID-19, and Today's Al Roker announced that he is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. Today brought another shocker: The Hollywood Reporter announced that comedian Sinbad is recovering from a stroke.
The actor's family gave a statement to the news outlet: "It is out of sincere love that we share Sinbad, our beloved husband and father, is recovering from a recent stroke," they said. "Sinbad is a light source of love and joy for many generations. While he is beginning his road to recovery, we are faithful and optimistic that he will bring laughter into our hearts soon."
Sinbad, born David Adkins, is best known not only for his stand-up work, but also for his roles in the sitcoms A Different World and The Sinbad Show in the late '80s and '90s, reports Fox News. He also starred in movies such as Jingle All the Way, and lent his voice to a number of Disney Channel cartoons.
Knowing the signs of stroke is vital
Although no details have yet been released about the comedian's medical history, strokes are generally linked either to family history or to lifestyle factors. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. — the controllable risk factors for the disease include high blood pressure, type 1 and 2 diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, lack of exercise, and a diet high in saturated fats. The genetic disease sickle cell anemia, which affects largely Black and Hispanic individuals, can also raise stroke risk.
The AHA also notes the four major stroke symptoms, which are easy to remember with the mnemonic hack F.A.S.T.: Face drooping on one side; Arm weakness (usually in just one arm); Slurring (speech difficult to understand); Time to call 911 immediately if you notice any or all of those warning signs. Severe headache, dizziness, lack of coordination, and mental confusion can also be signs of danger. Sinbad's family didn't indicate whether he exhibited any of these signs when he was admitted to the hospital, but quick medical treatment can help prevent stroke death and increase the chances of recovery.
