How Good Bones Star Mina Starsiak Hawk Deals With Being On TV - Exclusive

Starring in a reality show seems so glamorous — the cameras and lights that make everyone look fabulous, the drool-worthy makeup and wardrobe, not to mention the paychecks and fame. But, as any reality show celebrity can attest, being famous can be really challenging — especially in the modern world of social media. Trolls, hateful comments, and the constant scrutiny can quickly become a burden or distort a worldview. Even the act of filming itself can be trying, as Mina Starsiak Hawk told The List in an exclusive interview. "When we were filming full-time, you don't have time to go to your corners," the star of HGTV's Good Bones revealed. "You're just with each other all day, every day, and that can be really intense."

How do reality stars cope? Specifically, how does Mina Starsiak Hawk cope with the stress of filming and fame? In her interview with The List, Mina revealed how she deals with being on TV.

The advice Mina Starsiak Hawk lives by during filming

The advice that changed the way Mina Starsiak Hawk deals with being on TV came from her original network executive. The woman, who is no longer with the team that works on Good Bones, visited Mina early on in the process with some words of wisdom. Mina told the story: "She said, 'As long as you remember that none of this has anything to do with you, you'll stay humble and you'll be fine. The people who love you and build you up on social media and think you're the bee's knees ... They don't love you. They love the version of you that the show is showing. And the people who hate you and think you're terrible ... They don't hate you. They hate that version.'"

In other words, Starsiak Hawk was told to remember that who she is on the show has nothing to do with who she is in real life. And since the woman on the show isn't actually her, she's free to love herself and live her life. Wow — pretty deep, right? Starsiak Hawk thought so, too, as she's lived by this advice ever since.
