Inside Colourpop's Controversy With Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner took the world by storm when she launched her own line of lip kits and proceeded to make millions and millions of dollars with her Kylie Cosmetics brand. So, it seems only fitting that the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star would face some rumors and scandal along the way.

One of the more notable rumors surfaced in 2015 and suggested Jenner had ripped off ColourPop Cosmetics' formula (via Seventeen). At the time, Beauty vlogger Nikkie Tutorials told her fans and followers in a since-deleted tweet that she had been told Jenner's kits were "rebranded ColourPop liquid lipsticks." Makeup artist Grace Ha encouraged her online audience to purchase ColourPop's products if they "missed the new Kylie Lip Kit line." Ha also shared suspiciously similar side-by-side photos of products of the two companies before deleting her post from Instagram.

Following the speculation regarding her potential connection to ColourPop, Jenner took to her official Lip Kit page on Instagram, where she shared a photo of herself and the owners of ColourPop. "We don't have the same formula or exact colors but they are my friends and they do have some bomb a** products that I love," Jenner captioned the pic, failing to mention whether their brands were linked in some way.

A short time later, Laura and John Nelson, the founders of ColourPop, confirmed that their lab, Spatz Laboratories, does, in fact, make Kylie Cosmetics.

Kylie Jenner confirms she and ColourPop have the same manufacturer

During an interview with Refinery 29, the Nelsons insisted that despite being technically involved in a partnership with Jenner, their ColourPop Cosmetics brand is much different than Jenner's Kylie Cosmetics brand. "With each of the brands, it's going to be a little different how we leverage the resources and the infrastructure," John explained. "Everyone is coming up with their own formulas and their own exclusive products."

According to the report, the ColourPop Cosmetics team is located in a totally different building from that of Kylie Cosmetics. While Jenner has also maintained that her producers differ from the products of ColourPop Cosmetics, she told viewers of her app in a video that she loves ColourPop. "ColourPop and I are not the same," she continued. "I have an exclusive formula that I created myself...but we have the same manufacturer, along with so many other brands."
