What Does 'Better Than We Found It' By Maren Morris Mean?

Maren Morris has certainly been making waves in the world of country music over the past few years. When she released her album Girl in March 2019, it won Album of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards, and Morris was the artist there with the most nominations (via marenmorris.com).

Last month, when Taylor Swift put out the single "You All Over Me" from her rerecorded album Fearless (Taylor's Version), Morris was featured on it, as reported by Vulture. Morris will also perform at the Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday, April 18, Sounds Like Nashville reports, along with other big names like Kelsea Ballerini, Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, Dan + Shay, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, and Carrie Underwood.

It should be noted, as well, that in 2020, Morris' song "Better Than We Found It" came out, and its message is deeper and more powerful than fans may know.

Maren Morris calls 'Better Than We Found It' a protest song

Morris released "Better Than We Found It" after Black Lives Matter protests were happening across the nation. Its music video contains clips from the protests, and it features real people who have dealt with discrimination (via Rolling Stone). The video ends with Morris reading a letter to her son, Hayes, who was born to her and her husband, Ryan Hurd, in March 2020 (via People).

"It's a protest song. It's the most American thing to protest, and protest songs have been so embedded in American culture: Bob Dylan, Nina Simone. I think the world right now is sort of in a perpetual mourning period, and I wanted to have a song that had weight but also had hope. I still have hope for this country and for the future of it, and as a new mother, I wanted to promise my son that I'm going to do everything in my power to leave this world better than the one I came into and the one I see right now," she said, as stated by Rolling Stone.
