The Truth About Zara Tindall's Tragic Miscarriages

Zara Tindall, the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth and daughter of Princess Anne, gave birth to a baby boy named Lucas last month. According to People, she and husband Mike Tindall gave the child the middle name Philip, paying homage to Tindall's grandfather, Prince Philip. Unfortunately, Prince Philip never had the chance to meet his great grandchild (via Insider). The Duke of Edinburgh was ill in March and unable to meet the newborn due to COVID-19 restrictions. Prince Philip died on April 9, two months shy of his 100th birthday.

Lucas is Zara's third child and first boy, coming after seven-year-old Mia and two-year-old Lena. In his interview with People, Mike described Zara as a "warrior, as always." After all, the 39-year-old mom had to give birth at home, after she and Mike realized that they could not make it to the hospital in time. In calling Zara a warrior, however, Mike may have also been alluding to Zara's past traumas with pregnancy.

Zara Tindall suffered two miscarriages

Before becoming pregnant with her second daughter, Lena, Zara Tindall suffered from two tragic miscarriages. The granddaughter of Prince Philip opened up about her loss in an interview with The Times, and was reportedly candid and honest about her grief. "I think you need to go through a period where you don't talk about it because it's too raw," she said. "But, as with everything, time's a great healer."

Zara also revealed in an interview with BBC Breakfast just how challenging the experience was for her and her family. "The hardest thing, in our situation, is that everyone knew," she explained. Indeed, Hello magazine reported that Zara had to publicly announce her first miscarriage in 2016, because she had publicly announced her pregnancy.

Fortunately, Zara had her family to lean on. "I have a very supportive family ... Mike's incredible," she said. "It's been a horrible road. But you know, actually, now, we've come out the end of it. And hopefully it makes you a stronger family."
