The Truth About Kate Moss And Johnny Depp's Relationship

Johnny Depp's love life has been a headline topic since he first got his big break on the Fox police drama "21 Jump Street" back in the late 1980s. From Winona Ryder to Ellen Barkin, Depp has romanced celebrity after celebrity (via Elle). Some relationships lasted mere months, while others were several years long. Model Kate Moss is one of the women Depp stayed committed to for four years. Although they broke up before the 21st Century even began, fans are still fascinated by them.

What led them to be with one another? Well, shortly before Moss entered his life, Depp had ended a four-year relationship and three-year engagement to Ryder, his co-star in 1990's "Edward Scissorhands." The year was 1994 and Depp reportedly met Moss in a New York café. According to Cheat Sheet, Moss once said of their meeting, "I knew from the first moment we talked that we were going to be together." So what led to them to ultimately calling it quits?

Johnny and Kate had a wild, whirlwind romance

When Johnny Depp and Kate Moss first met, she was a 20-year-old jet-setting model with no real home and he was a 31-year-old Hollywood A-lister who was very much into the Hollywood club scene. Depending on who's telling the story, it seems as though the clubs were where their passionate and often-volatile relationship played out for the public to see.

Back in 1994, a source told People that Depp and Moss "can't keep their hands, lips, mouths, legs off of each other" when describing their frequent public displays of affection. However, they couldn't keep the screaming matches to themselves either, often embarking in brutal public fights. One friend described Depp's temper to People when Moss and Depp's battles were making headlines. "Instead of hitting women," they revealed, "he just gets angry and lets off steam in other ways." As many know, this is not the first nor last time aggression and his temper has been brought into conversations surrounding his relationships, per Insider

Johnny and Kate's tempers lead to trouble in hotels

Johnny Depp and Kate Moss apparently have legendary tempers and those angry streaks surely flared during their years together. In September 1994, one of their shouting matches resulted in the police being called, according to People. When authorities arrived they found a drunk Depp had trashed his New York hotel room, but Moss was unharmed. Depp was arrested, but the charges were later dismissed.

"I think Johnny obviously has a temper," movie director John Waters told People. "But this is a very minor incident. The room service must have been bad."

The couple also reportedly ordered 36 bottles of champagne to a London hotel for a champagne bath, but Moss denied that allegation. However, when the pair stayed in a French hotel in 1998, Moss allegedly lost her temper and trashed a room after being told she couldn't wear a bikini in the hallways.

After a wild few years, Johnny and Kate call it quits

By 1998, the wild, passionate, and volatile romance between Johnny Depp and Kate Moss came to an end, and in the ensuing years, both parties reflected on how they felt about one another.

"I have never got that emotional over a woman before," Depp told Hello! Magazine. "I have been so stupid because we had so much going for our relationship. I'm the one who has to take responsibility for what happened — I was difficult to get on with, I let my work get in the way and I didn't give her the attention I should have."

As for Moss, she took the break up hard, later telling Vanity Fair in 2012 how the tears flowed. "There's nobody that's ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit. I believed what he said," she revealed. "Like if I said, 'What do I do?' he'd tell me. And that's what I missed when I left. I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust."
