How Scarlett Johansson's Mother-In-Law Really Feels About Her Grandson's Name

Unusual celebrity baby names are nothing new. But it seems the name Scarlett Johansson and her husband Colin Jost gave their new baby has raised at least one person's eyebrows. Indeed, the movie star's mother-in-law is confused by the moniker Cosmo, according to a new interview the "SNL" star gave following the birth of the couple's son.

Appearing on "The Late Show" with Seth Meyers, Jost said his mom was "very supportive" overall. But he also told the host about the name Cosmo, "My mom, I would say, was slightly thrown by it and didn't quite understand it. I don't know if she thought it was kind of like a hippie thing" (via E! Online).

In fact, Jost's mom was so puzzled by the famous duo's baby name choice, she went so far as to try to change it — or at least hint that Johansson and her son should consider a slight alteration to her grandson's moniker.

"She would call us after three or four days, she'd be like, 'Cosmo.' And she'd be like, 'And now, is it final? Like, did you submit the birth certificate?' And we're like, 'Oh, yeah, we did that at the hospital,'" Jost recounted.

Scarlett Johansson's mother-in-law suggests changing Cosmo

Jost told Meyers about his mom's reaction to the baby name Cosmo, "She was like 'OK, interesting. Because I was reading that there's also a name Cosimo with an 'I,' so that could also be an option. Maybe Cosimo, that's his real name, but then you can call him still Cosmo'" (via E! Online).

Another suggestion she offered? Cosmos, who is a patron saint according to Jost's mom. The saint is actually named Cosmas, according to Britannica, but no matter, because Johansson and Jost are not looking to change their son's name.

The good news is that eventually, the movie star's mother-in-law accepted that her grandson's name is going to be Cosmo, with Jost explaining to Meyers, "So then she would call, and she would say, 'I met someone—they said their uncle's name is Cosmo. So it is OK.'"

Meanwhile, according to Nameberry, Cosmo means "order, beauty" and is of Greek origin. The site notes Cosmo was Kramer's first name on the show "Seinfeld," so it must be cool!
