The One Christmas Outfit Kate Middleton Regrets Ever Wearing

The thought that Kate Middleton could ever make a fashion misstep is counterintuitive. But it turns out the Duchess of York is more critical of herself than we could ever be of her. Indeed, Middleton has fashion regrets, as hard as it may be to believe. And there is one holiday outfit in particular that the mom of three looks back upon and wonders why she chose it.

First, it's worth noting that the royal's Christmas coats are practically legendary. Just days ago, she donned a red coat dress to a holiday concert, and the look made headlines (via Today). Her plaid coat in 2017 was hailed as "elegant" by Elle. Last year, Hello! devoted an entire article to her best Christmas outfits. The outlet reported that in 2019, Middleton sported a fur trimmed Catherine Walker coat, calling the choice "chic."

Middleton, it turns out, had a different take. We learned the truth about the look from Karen Anvil, who took an amateur photo of the princess and her family on Christmas that year.

As Anvil told Metro U.K., "Kate was talking to my daughter about clothes and how she was feeling too hot." In fact, the fashion icon actually said, "I really shouldn't have worn this."

Why didn't Kate Middleton take the coat off?

The encounter that revealed Middleton's regret over her 2019 Christmas Day outfit took place outside St. Mary Magdalene Church at Sandringham Estate (via Woman & Home).

"I'm there talking to Charlotte about dolls and my daughter's talking about fashion with Kate, "Anvil also told Metro U.K. about the exchange, adding, "It wasn't fake it was a genuine discussion, it was about a minute but it was tailored to my daughter, it was like speaking to a friend. They are totally different with the public."

That lovely tidbit aside, one has to wonder why Middleton did not just remove the too-hot garment. As Glamour reports, it's considered "unladylike" for a royal to remove her coat in public, and the Queen would not approve. And so, she had to suffer in her thick coat per royal protocol.

If it's any consolation, we couldn't tell you were too warm, Kate. You looked polished and poised as ever! But um, maybe look at the weather forecast for this year before making your outfit selection.
