Why Fans Are Still Upset Over The Series Finale Of HIMYM

"How I Met Your Mother" is one of the most beloved comedies of all time. The series featured an ensemble cast including Josh Radnor (Ted Mosby), Neil Patrick Harris (Barney Stinson), Jason Segel (Marshall Erikson), Alyson Hannigan (Lily Aldrin), and Cobie Smulders (Robin Scherbatsky), per IMDb. The show followed the gang in their 20s and 30s as they navigated life, careers, love, and friendship.

However, the final season of the show wasn't exactly what most fans expected. Instead, the entire season mostly took place during one weekend when Robin and Barney were set to be married. The couple did tie the knot, but it was revealed in a later episode that they eventually divorced. Meanwhile, Ted finally met the woman that he was to be his future wife and the two had a beautiful life together until she got sick and passed away, per Entertainment Weekly

As Ted ended the long story that had told his children about how he met their mother, his kids made it clear that the story was mostly about how their father was in love with Robin the entire time. They even encouraged him to tell her, and the show ended with Ted standing outside Robin's window holding a blue french horn, which was a call back to the first episode of the show. Although Ted and Robin were two of the main characters, many fans didn't like the way "HIMYM" ended.

Many HIMYM fans were disappointed by the finale

When "How I Met Your Mother" aired its series finale in March 2014, many fans were left stunned by what they'd witnessed, per Paste Magazine. Some viewers were upset that the show had opted to spend so much time on Robin and Barney's relationship only to have them get divorced early into the finale. Another blow to dedicated fans came when it was revealed that Robin had drifted apart from the rest of the group, who barely saw her unless it was a special occasion. During a scene between Robin and Lily, Robin admitted that she didn't feel comfortable hanging out with the gang anymore because it consisted of her ex-husband (Barney), her former boyfriend and his wife (Ted and Tracy), as well as a happily married couple in Marshall and Lily. A tearful Lily revealed that she understood and let Robin walk away.

However, the most painful part of the finale was arguably the death of Ted's wife, Tracy. Ted had spent multiple seasons telling his children the story of how amazing their mother was, and just when fans got to meet the adorable and likable character, she was taken away through death. The thing that really infuriates people is that there was an alternate ending to the show, in which Robin and Barney stayed married and Ted and Tracy lived happily ever after.
