The birth certificate, which was obtained by the outlet, states the baby's official name is Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. Malti is an Indian name and, per Tribune India, means "small fragrant flower or moonlight."
Both the moon and flowers flourish on their own, so the name may be a nod to Chopra's parenting style as well as to her Indian heritage. "I will never want to ... [be] imposing my desires, fears, or my upbringing on to my child ... I have always believed that children come through you not from you," Chopra told Lily Singh in an interview for Books & Books.
The baby's second name, Marie, is of ambiguous meaning according to Behind the Name. It's ultimately derived from the Hebrew Miryam, which could mean "sea of bitterness," "rebelliousness," or "wished for child." Per Today, it's a traditional middle name for baby girls in the U.S., making little Malti Marie's name a beautiful reflection of her Indian American heritage.
