Priyanka Chopra And Nick Jonas' Adorable Baby Name Explained

In January 2022, Priyanka Chopra, 39, and Nick Jonas, 29, shared happy family news, revealing that their baby was born. Chopra announced the exciting event on Instagram, writing, "We are overjoyed to confirm we have welcomed a baby via surrogate. We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family." Since then, the couple has been adjusting to parenthood privately and keeping information about the baby out of the spotlight.

You may recall back in December 2018, Chopra and Jonas said "I do" in a very elaborate wedding ceremony at the Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur, India (via Vogue). Six months before the wedding, Chopra shared with People her dream of having kids, saying that in ten years she absolutely wanted children.

The couple's relationship continued to transform and just a few years later, ahead of schedule, their daughter was born. Now, we're finally learning the baby's name.

Baby girl Jonas has the cutest name

Per TMZ, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas' daughter was born on January 15th at a San Diego hospital. The birth certificate, which was obtained by the outlet, states the baby's official name is Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. Malti is an Indian name and, per Tribune India, means "small fragrant flower or moonlight."

Both the moon and flowers flourish on their own, so the name may be a nod to Chopra's parenting style as well as to her Indian heritage. "I will never want to ... [be] imposing my desires, fears, or my upbringing on to my child ... I have always believed that children come through you not from you," Chopra told Lily Singh in an interview for Books & Books.

The baby's second name, Marie, is of ambiguous meaning according to Behind the Name. It's ultimately derived from the Hebrew Miryam, which could mean "sea of bitterness," "rebelliousness," or "wished for child." Per Today, it's a traditional middle name for baby girls in the U.S., making little Malti Marie's name a beautiful reflection of her Indian American heritage.
