General Hospital Explainer: Sasha's Conservatorship

The life of Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson) on "General Hospital" has finally improved lately. After her failed romance with Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell), Sasha's life spiraled out of control into what seemed like never-ending torture. It didn't help that the pressure of being a model representing the Deception Cosmetics company caused her to have dealings with drug kingpin Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober), who fed her increasing drug addiction. Sasha and Brando Corbin (Johnny Wactor) found themselves attracted to each other and had sex in one of the cars in his auto repair shop, leading to her getting pregnant. After a time, the couple realized they had feelings for each other and decided to move forward as a family.

Soon, Brando's mother, Gladys Corbin (Bonnie Burroughs), came to town and meddled in their lives, and Brando began working for his cousin, gangster Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard). While Sasha liked Sonny, she felt the business posed a danger to their family, so Brando honored her request and stopped working for Sonny.

Later, Gladys and Sasha were inadvertently locked up in a storage room at the Jerome art gallery when Sasha went into labor. Luckily, Brando rescued them, but Sasha ended up having a last-minute C-section. Unfortunately, the baby was born brain-dead and was placed in the NICU. Eventually, Brando and Sasha had to make the horrific choice to take little Liam off of life support.

A guardian was appointed to Sasha after several public breakdowns

Sasha had stopped her drug use when she was pregnant, but the pain of losing her son caused her to fall back on them, and she continued using them in secret — even when Brando surprised her with a trip to Niagara Falls where they eloped. Because she was in the public eye, Sasha's addiction caught the attention of a reporter who tried to bait her and publicly expose her for her addiction. This caused Sasha to have several breakdowns, including destroying the reporter's car and completely losing her composure on a live television event. She even accidentally ran over Harmony Miller (Inga Cadranel), killing her.

Although Sasha attempted therapy, the reporter, Grant Smoltz (David Lautman), pressed charges, so to avoid jail time, Sasha reluctantly agreed to have a court-appointed guardian chosen to manage her finances. Brando was eventually appointed as Sasha's guardian, but she wasn't too happy having her freedom restrained so much. However, just as things were starting to look up for Sasha, Brando fell victim to a serial murderer known as The Hook. Now widowed, Sasha no longer had a guardian and couldn't control her own money, so her friend, Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros), kindly took care of the cost of Brando's funeral arrangements.

Sasha feels ready to shed the conservatorship

In the aftermath of Brando Corbin's death, the courts soon appointed Sasha's mother-in-law, Gladys Corbin, as her conservator. Unfortunately, Gladys had been embroiled in illegal poker games being held by mobster Selina Wu (Lydia Look) in the back of the Savoy nightclub. At one point, Gladys sold Brando's garage to pay off her debts without telling Sasha. When Sasha eventually learned of what had happened, Gladys claimed that the building reminded her of her son, and she had to get rid of it. But now, Gladys has racked up even more debts, and she plans to use Sasha's funds to pay back Ms. Wu. However, Sasha has been working hard to put her life back together, and after another appearance on the "Home & Heart" TV show, she was able to keep her cool despite the host, Haven de Havilland (Morgan Fairchild), trying to trick her into having another live breakdown.

"General Hospital" fans were surprised to see Genie Francis' (Laura Collins) daughter, Eliza Frakes, appear as a production assistant named Julie on "Home & Heart," who was forced to bait Sasha with the sounds of a baby crying in her earpiece. Fortunately, Cody Bell (Josh Kelly) secretly threatened to streak naked across the live set if the production staff didn't stop trying to make Sasha have another breakdown. His ploy worked, and Sasha got through the live TV presentation swimmingly.

Sasha now feels so good about her success, and so she's decided to petition to have the conservatorship removed — much to Gladys' chagrin.
