Diane Keaton's death at age 79 left film buffs and fans devastated. The iconic actor seemingly had no health issues prior to her passing, and the news came as a shock to many. She appeared to be happy and healthy in her last Instagram post on April 11, smiling widely while posing with her adorable golden retriever in honor of National Pet Day. There was no sign of the heartbreak to come.

It wasn't just her millions of devotees who were blindsided by Keaton's unexpected death. According to a close friend, her health had taken a sharp turn for the worse just months prior, and proceeded to decline rapidly. "It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit," a source told People on October 11, adding that she'd kept her difficulties a secret from those outside of her inner circle. "In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private," they shared.

Keaton's children, Dexter and Duke, were understandably devastated by their mom's demise. A short statement from her rep requested privacy for family members while they grieved their loss.

Keaton's legacy forever lives on

Diane Keaton's death is the latest in what's sadly a long list of stars we've lost in 2025 — including fellow screen icons Gene Hackman, Val Kilmer, and Terence Stamp, among others. Keaton was known as down-to-earth, passionate, charming, and warm with a distinctly individual style both on and off camera, and she made a lasting impression on the multitude of stars she worked with over the years.

Many took to social media to express their sorrow and pay their respects. "The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me," Bette Midler, who co-starred with the actor in "The First Wives Club," wrote on Instagram alongside a black and white pic of Keaton in her trademark glasses and hat. Midler praised her confrère for her wicked sense of humor, generosity of spirit, and authenticity.

Although Keaton kept her final health issues private, she'd previously been open about her medical struggles over the years, which included a battle with bulimia and a skin cancer diagnosis. In a May 2015 interview with The Los Angeles Times, she admitted that she hadn't taken the latter seriously for years. "Back in my 20s, I didn't pay attention much," she admitted. "I didn't research and didn't really care, and that was stupid because it's dogged me my entire adult life, even recently. I didn't start sun care until my 40s."
