Cher Looks Different Without Her Signature Dark Hair

As the "Goddess of Pop," Cher is known for her distinctive voice and renowned music, of course, but that's not all. Her signature style, including her long, jet-black hair, is just as famous. Cher's dark, gothic look is a major part of who she is, which is why it's so shocking when she switches it up. Cher couldn't look more different without her dark tresses flowing around her face. She has gone blond and tried out other hues throughout the years, but luckily, just temporarily. She uses wigs to change the color of her hair, and she reportedly keeps nearly 100 different wigs in a climate-controlled wig room in her Malibu home, according to the biography "The Cher Scrapbook" (per Allure). "It's no trouble at all being [blond] because it's not my real hair, it's a wig," Cher told Hello! Magazine in October 2001.

"My real hair is all under here, real tight to the head, that's all. It is long and brunette," Cher added. "There's nothing wrong with my hair, but I love wigs, and always have. They are so low maintenance. It just makes it easier to change my image." She loves trying new things, but there is one hairstyle you'll never see on Cher. Unlike other celebrities who have embraced going gray, that is not in the cards for Cher. "[Going gray] is fine for other girls. I'm just not doing it!" she told People in January 2022. Still, that hasn't stopped her from changing her dark hair every now and then, no matter how much we associate that look with Cher. She looks gorgeous with any hair color!

Cher said goodbye to her dark black hair at the Met Gala in May 2026. She wore a natural-looking platinum blond wig (complete with dark roots showing at the top) that was parted in the middle and curled loosely around her shoulders. She looked stunning with this color, which was a departure from her usual 'do and stood out against her black outfit. She rocked a leather corset top with shimmery embellishments as a contrast to her lighter locks.
