How Annette Bening Brought Beulah To Life On Dutton Ranch, From Accent To Wardrobe

Western drama "Yellowstone" was a massive hit, with millions tuning in to watch each week, and with its success came a number of spin-offs. Along with prequels about how the Dutton family ranch came to be, a couple of shows took a look at the lives of some of John's kids following the events of "Yellowstone." "Marshals," on CBS, is led by Luke Grimes as he continues his role as Kayce Dutton. Over on "Dutton Ranch," we get to see how the lives of Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly, and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) play out as they work to build a ranch life for themselves in the fictional small town of Rio Paloma, Texas.

Anyone who watched "Yellowstone" knows how formidable Beth can be. But she has a worthy adversary, and occasional ally, in Beulah Jackson, on "Dutton Ranch." Beulah is portrayed by Oscar nominee Annette Bening. She's the Jackson family matriarch and in charge of 10 Petal Ranch. She's a strong, fierce, and highly capable Texan with an impressive wardrobe, and Bening was hugely excited to play her. 

"They told me the story, and I thought it sounded like a lot of fun," the actor told The Wrap in May 2026. "It sounded like an adventure in Texas, which it became, and that it was Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who I had been watching for decades." Once Bening signed onto the spinoff, it took some work to fully inhabit such a complex character.

Beulah Jackson comes from a long line of Texas ranchers, and she's got the Texas accent to prove it. It's not an overly deep Southern drawl, though, it's on the subtler side. However, it's definitely distinctive, and it took some work for Bening to get it down and figure out just how far to push the Texas twang. As the "American Beauty" star explained to Variety, in May 2026, she was able to develop Beulah's distinctive accent by "doing a lot of listening." 

The Oscar-nominee elaborated, "That's always the most powerful part. [...] In Texas, some people sound very strong, other people sound very mild. So I worked that out in terms of how far to go and what that sound might be like." Bening got inspiration for Belulah's twang from some real women, including a "wonderful Texas journalist named Molly Ivins, who was a very progressive, wonderful character [...] [who] had this wonderful accent. She was friends with Ann Richards, who was the governor of Texas, who I also listened to a lot." 

Beth Dutton winningly described Beulah Jackson as a "grizzly in Gucci" during a May 2026 interview with Entertainment Tonight. It's an apt description. Even though she doesn't necessarily wear Gucci, Annette Bening's character is always well put together, and it's clear that the pieces didn't come cheap. Her style is western luxury — think fringe, embroidery, bedazzled shirts, and always more, more, more. Beulah also wears tons of accessories and jewelry with just about every outfit. Even when she's on horseback, she'll have a stylish scarf tied around her neck and a swish pair of sunglasses. The matriarch tends to wear plenty of eye-catching jewelry too, including lots of turquoise, a stone which has long been associated with the American West. 

In July 2026, Bening told The Hollywood Reporter all about how Beulah's outfits make sense for Texas, alongside her position as the head of an established rancher family. "The whole world of the way that women dress up in Texas is, for me, beautiful, and really a wonderful part of Beulah," she explained. "Not all of the ranch women are into bling, but many of them are. Especially if it's a rodeo day or a going-out-on-the-town day or to a party." It's the opposite of the "quiet luxury" trend.

Annette Bening some spent time in Texas, to get the feel of the place before appearing on "Dutton Ranch," and she worked to learn more about the area as well as the women who were in similar positions to Beulah Jackson. "I was lucky, I was introduced to a number of women who live in that area who run ranches," the "Kids Are All Right" star proudly told People in June 2026. Beulah grew up on a Texas ranch, presumably riding horses from a young age. To convincingly play the part, Bening needed to be comfortable on a horse. She didn't have to attend the the cowboy camp training that some of the other "Dutton Ranch" and "Yellowstone" stars had to, in order to make sure they could play their own parts well, but she still needed lessons. 

In a May 2026 appearance on "CBS Mornings," the actor confirmed, "I did take lessons and the wranglers on our show are phenomenal. [...] I had great lessons. Really enjoyed riding." However, it wasn't something that came easily to her. "I've been intimidated by them in the past," Bening acknowledged, "and I've seen some accidents and things [...] I really needed help." They clearly paid off, since she totally looks the part confidently riding across the Texas range on "Dutton Ranch."
