Why Sofia Vergara Strayed Away From Her Natural Blonde Hair Color
Sofia Vergara is often seen with dark brown hair on screen, but the Colombian actor is a natural blonde. She made the choice to keep her hair dark over the years for the sake of her success. She told People in 2024 that she didn't match the physical standards for Latin women in Hollywood when she joined the industry. "They were expecting a more dark-haired woman," she said. "It was difficult because they were a little confused, like, 'This woman sounds like a Latin woman but she's blonde.'" Vergara slayed the blonde to brunette transformation, and she thinks the initially difficult decision helped a lot with her career. She said, "And it changed my life because I got hired to do Modern Family, which I did for 11 years."
People who don't really know Vergara might think she looks wildly different with her natural hair, but the actor let it show as a highlight color on later seasons of "Modern Family." "After the third season, I thought, 'Maybe now that everybody knows Gloria is Latin and they know me, I could go back to my more natural hair color,'" she recalled.
She had this problem when she had very dark hair
Sofia Vergara is one of many celebrities who look nice without their natural hair color, but it took a lot of work to maintain her brown locks. In a 2014 interview with Redbook Magazine, the actor recalled the stark difference between her roots and the rest of her hair in her early brunette days. "Having blonde roots with dark hair, you start looking bald! So I've been making it lighter recently, just because it's easier," she explained. "When my hair was very dark, I had to dye my roots every month—it was a lot of maintenance. Now I can go two or three months between colorings."
When asked if her waves were really hers, Vergara told Redbook about the additional maintenance required for that look. "My hair is actually straight, so I use a curling iron to create them because my hair doesn't do well with a lot of product. I can't put oils, pomades, or anything else in it because it gets weighed down," she said. Vergara's lighter brown hair is clearly a better choice for her hair health. The actor's natural color not only blends with it better; she probably has less heat damage from switching her blonde locks to brown with spaced out root touch-ups.
