It can sometimes feel like the British royal family is always feuding. Along with the usual gossip of in-fighting and intentional snubs between the younger members of the family, the 2026 release of "Swan Song," a book by Charles Spencer, brother of the late Princess Diana, revealed King Charles III's reportedly cold comments shortly after the death of his ex-wife, reopening old wounds. But for all the chaos surrounding the House of Windsor, one family member has shown an amazing ability to stay out of the mud that has sullied almost everyone else.

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, and wife to Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, worked as a PR executive before marrying into the royal family, and she knows how to get positive headlines. According to former royal aide Alisa Anderson-Cole (via the Daily Mail), Sophie's real talent is her ability to mix serious issues with humanity and lightheartedness. She said, "She is not afraid to show her fun side while promoting incredibly important issues like gender equality, education and nature."

Involved with Prince Edward since 1993, Sophie has proven herself a master at keeping her part of the royal family away from scandal. The duchess' skills haven't gone unnoticed by other members of the family, and she has become someone William, Prince of Wales, reportedly turns to for advice. According to the Daily Mail's Royal Editor Rebecca English, this is something William's dad can get behind, saying, "I know the King sees Sophie very much as a safe pair of hands and her growing closeness with the Princess of Wales will only go to strengthen the family in the future." With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, living back in the U.K., perhaps Sophie's influence can help put to rest Harry and William's rift once and for all.

King Charles III is reportedly hopeful that Princess Sophie can clean up the royal family's biggest PR nightmare

It's no secret that Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, was reportedly Queen Elizabeth II's favorite daughter-in-law because, as Ingrid Seward explained to Hello!, "Sophie never pushes herself forward or wants to make things about her." The duchess did find herself caught up in some scandals not long after she married Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, but worked through them. More importantly, she learned how to never make the same mistakes again. Since then, Sophie has used her past experience in public relations to keep the focus on her charity work, ensuring that she — and the family — get some good press.

Sophie's September 2026 trip to Zambia showed just how well she could pivot when her luggage didn't arrive with her, leaving her with just the clothes on her back. While William, Prince of Wales, and Harry, Duke of Sussex's feud served as front-page material for the British tabloids, the duchess was busy dancing with a group of women in her so-called "aeroplane clothes" (per Hello!) and reminding people that the royal family can do more than just bicker. As Alisa Anderson-Cole told the Daily Mail, "Once again she has proved what a huge asset she is to the King and the monarchy."

King Charles reportedly even asked Sophie and his sister Anne, Princess Royal, to try to get Prince William and Prince Harry to mend fences, with an insider telling Closer, "No doubt Sophie will be softer about it than Anne, who's never afraid to tell it like it is." If Sophie is the one responsible for getting the two warring brothers to set aside their differences, she will have helped her family clean up a PR mess that has hounded them for years.
