The Top 10 Guest Stars On Gilligan's Island, Ranked
"Gilligan's Island" was a hit for a reason. This sitcom gave the world some of the '60s TV characters with the most iconic fashion, one legendary theme song, and of course, lots of laughs. Yet, there's one thing this beloved series had that only true "Gilligan's Island" fans may know. It actually featured some seriously famous actors from the '60s — not even as the main cast, but as guest stars.
The series' guest stars were all over the map. There were famous comedians, voice actors, and even stars from other fan-favorite sitcoms of the era. With a total of 99 episodes during its 1964-1967 run, the series had plenty of time to invite other characters to the island beyond the famous main seven castaways. It would take quite a while to list all the guest stars the series ever had. So, instead, we've narrowed it down to the 10 most well-known guest star moments. We've ranked the guest stars based on their star power, screen time, performance, and the characters they played for the ultimate list of "Gilligan's Island" guest stars. From a very confused pilot, to a talking parrot, and even a famous actor when he was just 13 years old, this list may make you want to tune into a few episodes of the fan-favorite sitcom.
10. Vito Scotti
Vito Scotti appeared in films like "The Godfather" and countless TV series, like "The Addams Family" and "The Flying Nun." He also made not one, but four guest appearances on "Gilligan's Island." He played the Japanese sailor in the Season 1 episodes entitled "So Sorry, My Island Now" and "Diogenes, Won't You Please Go Home?" and Dr. Boris Balinkoff in Season 2, Episode 29 "The Friendly Physician" and Season 3, Episode 9 "Ring Around Gilligan." He's included in the ranking, since playing two characters was certainly memorable. He's ranked last because these characters really don't hold up well in terms of offensive tropes.
9. The Harlem Globetrotters
When the Harlem Globetrotters ventured to Gilligan's Island, it was a particularly unique guest-starring moment — and not just because it was a whole team instead of just one actor. The team actually appeared in a 1981 TV movie, aptly named "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island." Despite hitting TV nearly 15 years after the series finale, many OG cast members were still there and accounted for. This movie was far from beloved the way the series was, but it's still an undeniably important guest star moment.
8. Don Rickles
Older folks may know Emmy-winner and comedian Don Rickles from "Kelly's Heroes," "CPO Sharkey," or even "Dean Martin's Celebrity Roasts." Generations that came after likely remember him as the beloved Mr. Potato Head in Pixar's "Toy Story" movies. For some "Gilligan's Island" fanatics, though, he'll always be Norbett Wiley from Season 3, Episode 12 "The Kidnapper." Rickles brought his one-of-a-kind comedy style to the character, who held the women on the island hostage until the gang captured him and tried to change his criminal ways. Not everyone loved Rickles' humor, though, like Russell Johnson, who played the Professor.
7. Sandra Gould
If you loved "Gilligan's Island," then there's a good chance you also loved "Bewitched." And if you loved both, then you probably loved "Gilligan's Island" Season 2, Episode 17 "You've been Disconnected." Best known for playing Gladys Kravitz on "Bewitched," Sandra Gould was also frequently cast as a telephone operator throughout her career. Most notably, she played the telephone operator on duty when the "Gilligan's Island" gang discovers a telephone cable washed ashore. While the episode didn't yield the castaways the ticket home they'd hoped for, it did yield a great guest appearance.
6. Kurt Russell
"Gilligan Meets Jungle Boy," Season 1, Episode 19 of "Gilligan's Island," first aired in 1965. The jungle boy mentioned in the episode title was none other than Kurt Russell. Russell was just 13 when he took on the role of a boy whom the gang discovers alone in the forest. Believe it or not, though, there's no question it's him. Of course, he's aged a lot in the past six decades. Yet, his smile and dimples haven't changed one bit. Russell had only started acting three years earlier with a small, uncredited role on "Dennis the Menace."
5. Phil Silvers
Known for "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," and of course "The Phil Silvers Show" and "The New Phil Silvers Show," Phil Silvers, aka "the King of Chutzpah," was certainly beloved. So, it's no surprise that "Gilligan's Island" Season 3, Episode 4 "The Producer" was also beloved, since it featured Silvers as Harold Hecuba. Harold was a Hollywood producer who lands on the island, prompting the gang to perform "Hamlet" for him. Art was imitating life here, since Silvers was a producer on the show IRL.
4. Hans Conried
Hans Conried was an important guest star in "Gilligan's Island" history; he had the honor of playing two different episodes' titular character. Conried appeared early on during the show's run. In Season 1, Episode 5 "Wrongway Feldman," he played none other than Wrongway Feldman, a long-missing World War I pilot, who was known for going — you guessed it — the wrong way. He lands on the island, and the castaways hope, to no avail, that he'll get them home. Luckily for fans, Wrongway Feldman would return in Season 1, Episode 24, fittingly named "The Return of Wrongway Feldman."
3. Mel Blanc
Mel Blanc was a particularly interesting "Gilligan's Island" guest star because viewers never actually saw him, even though they did see the characters he played. Blanc is known as "The Man of a Thousand Voices," and that famous voice has been heard in everything from "The Flintstones" to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." It was also heard in an episode in the first season of "Gilligan's Island" and two episodes during the second season. He played Ribbit the Frog, Sam the Parrot, and other background animal voices.
2. Zsa Zsa Gabor
In 1965, "Gilligan's Island" was in its second season, and it scored a very special guest star for the season's 15th episode, "Erika Tiffany-Smith to the Rescue." The episode's titular wealthy socialite, Erika Tiffany-Smith, arrives on the island in hopes of buying it to transform it into a resort. The casting department really outdid itself on this one, casting one of the most famous socialites of the time, actor Zsa Zsa Gabor. To say she fit the character well would be an understatement, "dahling."
1. The Wellingtons
In 1965, Season 2, Episode 12 of "Gilligan's Island," titled "Don't Bug the Mosquitoes," premiered. The episode revolves around a rock band called The Mosquitoes that lands on the island in hopes of a vacation, only to be — as the episode title says — "bugged" relentlessly by the castaways. Sure, it's a fun episode, but what earned it our ranking's No. 1 spot? That's thanks to the Mosquitoes, themselves, who are played by the real-life band The Wellingtons. The Wellingtons performed the series' famous theme song during the first season, making them extra special guests.
