Olivia Plath Reveals Her In-Laws Have Not Reached Out Since Estrangement

Olivia Plath gave an update on where things stand with her estranged in-laws, revealing that they are still not on speaking terms. Season 2 of Welcome to Plathville has explored this altered dynamic. "During last year, we were allowed to see [his younger siblings] some, and then last fall, everything just completely changed and we were not allowed to see the kids at all," Olivia explained on the show (via People). "It was just toxic."

Her husband, Ethan, explained that the tension with his family led to him and Olivia cutting off contact with his parents, Kim and Barry. "We needed space as a couple, so we decided that that meant no contact with my parents," he said.

Things haven't improved, either. Olivia revealed to People that she and Ethan, along with Ethan's younger brother, Micah — who is also estranged from his parents — spent Christmas on their own this year, traveling to Minnesota to see Ethan's grandparents. "This is Ethan's first white Christmas because he didn't celebrate Christmas growing up, and so it has been a lot of fun," said Olivia. "We've watched a lot of Christmas movies and hung out with his grandparents here."

Kim and Barry Plath have not reached out to Ethan and Olivia

While Olivia said that Ethan has talked to his parents since cutting off contact, they are not currently communicating. "I know it hasn't quite aired yet, but I think they have teased it that there is a point at the end of the season where Ethan does talk to his parents and lets them know how he feels about things," she revealed. "And that was a pretty wild little adventure in and of itself. But as of right now, we just decided, you know, we're on a no-contact basis."

She added that Kim and Barry Plath have made no efforts to heal the rift with their oldest son. "When Ethan went no-contact, his parents basically said, 'Alright, we're totally fine with that' and haven't made any effort to reconcile," she said. While making the decision to cut off contact with the Plaths was difficult, Olivia said that "it was the healthiest and best thing for us when Ethan decided that and just focusing on us, focusing on moving and growing."

Olivia hopes that one day Ethan will be able to at least reconnect with his younger siblings. "I wish so bad that Ethan could celebrate the holidays with his siblings," she said. "But then on the other hand, his siblings don't celebrate holidays and never have and they wouldn't be allowed to. So that part of it is just, in a sense hopeful because we know that in the future when they're older and they can drive and they can make their own choices like Micah and Moriah, then they will celebrate holidays. And then we can have new memories with them."
