The Hidden Meaning Behind Selena Gomez's De Una Vez Dress

The moment we've been waiting for has arrived! The music video for Selena Gomez's new Spanish-language single, "De Una Vez," dropped on Thursday, January, 14, 2021. In less than 24 hours, it has already garnered nearly eight million views on YouTube.

It's no surprise that Gomez wears an absolutely stunning outfit as she sings about heartbreak and healing — but the Rodarte dress wasn't chosen simply because it's aesthetically pleasing. The pink dress with a daisy print is symbolic.

As Gomez told Vogue, it was important to her that the video reflects her culture. "If I was going to completely immerse myself into a project inspired by Latin culture, I wanted to work with native Spanish speaking creators," she explained to the outlet. Gomez opted to work with couple Tania Verduzco, who is from Mexico, and Adrian Perez, who is from Spain, to create the perfect visuals for her new song.

Verduzco and Perez, better known as Los Perez, drew heavily from magical realism as inspiration for the video.

Selena Gomez's 'De Una Vez' dress is a tribute to Frida Kahlo

"Magical realism has always been part of the Latin culture, whether it be in art or telenovelas," Gomez told Vogue. "I wanted [to capture] that sense of a supernatural world."

A crucial element of the visuals is, of course, Gomez's outfit. In addition to the pink floral Rodarte dress, she adorned her hair with flowers. Los Perez explained that the outfit and hairstyle were inspired by iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (via Page Six).

"We wanted to have these connections, to create this look, and to play with the amazing flowers the way Frida did, but making it modern and cool for right now," Verduzco said in the interview with Vogue.

She added that it fits with the song's theme of renewal, while Gomez explained that nature is a constant throughout the video because it "represents healing and growth."

Gomez, 28, hopes that viewers and listeners will take away the message that there is hope after experiencing pain. The singer-songwriter has certainly gone through more than her fair share of physical and emotional pain over the past decade. In addition to highly publicized breakups with Justin Bieber and The Weeknd, Gomez has been open about her mental health struggles and her battle with lupus, which required a kidney transplant in 2017.
