Inaugural Poet Amanda Gorman Has An Equally Impressive Twin Sister

Poet Amanda Gorman made international headlines when she read her stirring work, "The Hill We Climb," at Joe Biden's presidential inauguration. At 22, Gorman was the youngest inauguration poet ever — but she had previous experience, given Gorman is also the first ever Youth Poet Laureate, as Oprah magazine notes. THR explained that she credits her 2012 enrollment in the L.A. based nonprofit WriteGirl with launching her incredible career aspirations — which include running for president.

"It's been thanks to their support that I've been able to chase my dreams as a writer," Gorman gushed. The Los Angeles native and her twin sister, Gabrielle, were raised by a single mother, who works as a teacher and enrolled the girls in the group in ninth grade. WriteGirl has an impressive 100 percent record of college attendance for its graduates. The importance of female role models evidently worked wonders on Gabrielle too, who's just as impressive in her own right.

Gabrielle Gorman is an activist and filmmaker

Gabrielle Gorman graduated from UCLA's School of Film and Television in 2020. As her website notes, the intrepid young filmmaker has had an incredible trajectory thus far. She was chosen as an official Shondaland "shadowee" in 2016, meaning Gorman cut her teeth on the sets of huge shows like How to Get Away with Murder. She won the Aaron Sorkin Writing Award at the 2016 WestFlix Film Festival, too. The following year, Gorman interned at Complex magazine while her short, Dear America, featured in "a PBS special on race in America." Gorman's films have received massive acclaim thus far. In 2018, the poet laureate's twin sister interned at Scooter Braun Projects, as well as at legendary Black filmmaker Ava DuVernay's "grassroots organization," Array.

She also attended the Sundance Film Fetival as a YoungArts x Sundance Ignite fellow, as per Radio.com. A fourth internship took Gorman to shoe company TOMS, while, also in 2019, she directed a powerful documentary entitled Mr. Ewing. Adding to her impressive track record thus far, The Sun reports Gorman was named among the top seven young filmmakers in the U.S. by the National Young Arts Foundation. Likewise, Gorman was one of just 60 artists to be nominated as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts. There's no doubt the future is just as bright for Gorman as her sister.
