What Does 24kGoldn's Mood Mean?

The self-proclaimed "Steve Jobs of the music industry right now," artist 24kGoldn, who was born Golden Landis Von Jones, is behind one of the biggest songs of the past year, (via The Rolling Stones).

After signing with his label RECORDS in 2019, he's released three RIAA-certified singles that helped him gain notoriety. His biggest hit to date is undeniably his chart-topping track "Mood." The hit single spent an impressive seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was the No.1 song on Spotify's global chart on September 20, 2020, (via Complex).

Like many young rappers of the moment, the popular video-sharing platform TikTok helped catapult Goldn's record to new heights. "Mood" has been used in over 3 million TikTok videos and became one of the app's most popular songs in the summer. Goldn revealed to Variety that he had big hopes for his track. He shared, "Right from the jump, I knew 'Mood' was gonna be huge because I'd never had a song debut so strong." The 20-year-old also stopped by Genius to explain the meaning of the breakout single.

24kGoldn wrote "Mood" while playing Call of Duty

24kGoldn revealed that he wrote "Mood" at the beginning of quarantine while he was playing "Call of Duty" with his friend Iann Dior — who he also featured on the track, according to Complex. Goldn remembers that his friend Omer Fendi — who later helped produced the "Mood" — was strumming a tune on his guitar and Goldn began singing over it. This was the moment when he came up with the song's infectious hook "Why you always in a mood? F**kin' round, actin' brand new / I won't tryna tell you what to do, but try to play it cool."

This portion of the chorus extended into a song that's about toxic relationships. Throughout the song, Goldn raps about being fed up with girl's "rules" and constant attitude changes. He sings on the pre-chorus, "We play games of love to avoid the depression / We been here before and I won't be your victim." These lines express that he won't allow the girl he is singing about to mess around with him anymore. Though the song is about difficult emotions and situations it has a very upbeat and happy tune. This juxtaposition can be seen throughout the rest of Goldn's debut album "El Dorado" and works well for the rising star.
