The Truth About Katey Sagal's Ex-Husbands

Katey Sagal has been a part of the television landscape for the better part of 50 years. Her long career on the small screen was dotted with highs and lows. She has created many iconic characters that are beloved by fans around the world. Yet, for as much as Sagal's public life is known by fans, her private life has been kept relatively quiet.

Sagal has been married a total of four times. Each of these men played an integral part in creating the woman she has become and has spanned each phase of her professional career. With each husband, a different element of her evolution as a character actor was formed, helping her to grow into the independent personality she portrays in characters such as her most recent role in ABC's "Rebel" (via ABC). Who are Katey Sagal's ex-husbands? How long was she married? How much do you think you know about this talented singer/actress? There may be a lot you didn't understand about her private life.

Her first husband was musician Freddie Beckmeier

Katey Sagal was married to Freddie Beckmeier from 1977 through 1981. He was the founder of the Beckmeier Brothers and a member of the band Full Moon. He also was the former bassist of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Before marrying Beckmeier, Sagal was involved in a romantic relationship with KISS founder Gene Simmons (via Ultimate Classic Rock). She dated Simmons on and off for several years before meeting her first husband. When Beckmeier asked her to marry him, Sagal reportedly told the KISS bassist she would marry Beckmeier unless he proposed. Sagal said that Simmons laughed at her, so she married Beckmeier in 1977, only to divorce three years later.

During her marriage to Beckmeier, Sagal was not working in Hollywood as an actor. Instead, she was working as a backing vocalist for Simmons' solo album. She also hit the road with Bette Midler as a member of The Harlettes in 1978 alongside Linda Hart and Franny McCartney (via Bustle).

Sagal's second marriage was to another musician, Fred Lombardo

Katey Sagal was married to Fred Lombardo for three years. Lombardo was also a musician. They tied the knot in 1986 and divorced in 1989. During that period, Sagal was working steadily in Hollywood as an actor. She appeared on the TV series "Mary" as Jo Tucker and in the movies "Maid to Order" and "The Good Mother" (via IMDb)

During that time, Sagal nabbed the role that would change her television career, Peg Bundy on Fox's "Married with Children." She played the lazy, smart-mouthed, self-indulgent, bon-bon eating, sex-starved wife of shoe salesman Al (Ed O'Neill) and mother of ditzy daughter Kelly (Christina Applegate) and lazy son Bud (David Faustino) (via IMDb). Sagal and Lombardo were married for the first two years she worked on the series before they divorced. Though her work on the popular sitcom kept Sagal plenty busy, she was not single for long after splitting from Lombardo.

Katey married husband number three, drummer Jack White, in 1990

In 1990, Katey Sagal began dating drummer Jack White. In 1993 they tied the knot (via Superbhub). Before the couple wed, in 1991, Sagal was pregnant with their first daughter, a little girl they named Ruby. Ruby was stillborn eight months into her pregnancy. "It was a very difficult thing. I lost a child at almost eight months, and I could not wrap my brain around it," she said. Sagal's pregnancy was written into the "Married With Children" storyline but was later dismissed as a dream sequence out of respect for Sagal (via Do You Remember). "'This is what they say about stillbirth, that 60% of it is God's will and there's no medical reason. That's what I was told. And I just couldn't let go of the control of somehow, [the notion that] I had done something wrong," she shared in an interview on The View.

The couple would have two more children, a daughter, Sarah Grace, in 1994 and a son, Jackson James, in 1996. They would split in 2000, citing irreconcilable differences (via The Associated Press).

Katy Sagal's current husband is Kurt Sutter

Katey Sagal married Kurt Sutter in 2010. The couple was introduced through a mutual friend (via E! Online). "He asked me if I would have coffee with him sometime, and I said yes, and then I was kind of was out of touch because I had my little kids and was running around with my children. And then he called me like a couple of months later and asked me to coffee, and we went and kind of never left each other after that."

Sagal and the "Sons of Anarchy" creator welcomed daughter Esme via surrogate in 2007 (via People). "At this point, I was too old to carry a child," she explained. "So, at first, we explored adoption, but that proved to be way more difficult than I expected. We went through the whole in-vitro fertilization process, and our embryos were not strong, but we thought, 'Let's give it a shot, and if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. And if it wasn't, we weren't going to do it," she said.
