Why The Actors In Planters' Super Bowl 2022 Commercial Look Familiar

We're just days away from the Super Bowl 2022 taking over the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. But, aside from wondering who's going to emerge victorious when the Los Angeles Rams take on the Cincinnati Bengals, there are plenty of fun commercials to get excited about, too. As Yahoo! details, we've already been gifted plenty of fun spots and teasers thus far, with celebrities as wide-ranging as Jennifer Coolidge, Scarlett Johansson, and Steve Buscemi all gamely getting silly to sell us various products.

The Planters Super Bowl commercial may just be the funniest one yet (via YouTube). The ad is already dividing Twitter with its central debate, which revolves around the best way to eat nuts — do you enjoy them one by one, or stuff a whole bunch in your face simultaneously? As The Sun notes, this year, the company sidelined their beloved mascot, Mr. Peanut — partly because he died in their 2020 Super Bowl ad, per NBC News — in favor of putting a couple of comedic A-listers front and center instead.

So, who are these dueling bros with such deep-seated opinions on proper nut eating etiquette, anyway?

The actors in Planters' Super Bowl 2022 ad are former co-stars

As Ad Age confirms, the actors bickering over the correct way to eat nuts in the Planters' Super Bowl 2022 commercial are none other than Ken Jeong and Joel McHale. The comedic stars previously appeared together in cult favorite sitcom "Community," so this ad represents something of a reunion for them. In the hilarious 30-second clip, Jeong finds McHale munching on handfuls of mixed nuts while he opts to eat them more delicately, one at a time.

Jaynee Dykes, senior brand manager for Planters, explained the reasoning behind the ad. "We noticed people go about eating them one of two ways, either all together or they pick them out one at a time." Dykes said, adding, "We also know that Americans are more than happy to pick sides, so we decided [to] have fun with it and bring to life the all-important, nutty debate of how to eat your Planters Deluxe Mixed Nuts." Obviously, a fight ensues between Jeong and McHale.

In fact, the commercial ends with the country descending into chaos as people battle over the right way to eat nuts, leading McHale to knowingly quip, "Who knew America would tear itself apart over a relatively minor difference of opinion?" Aside from "Community," former doctor Jeong has featured in "The Hangover" series and "Crazy Rich Asians," while McHale put his comedic stylings to the test in "Ted," "Santa Clarita Diet," and lots more.
