Why General Hospital Fans Want Carly And Sonny To Be Done For Good

It finally happened on "General Hospital" — for the fifth time for a couple that has been married five times. Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) walked in on Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) in bed with another woman, as she is apt to do, and decided she wants a divorce. In fact, the last time Carly walked in on Sonny in bed with another woman, that woman was her divorce lawyer, and Carly still took him back as she has been doing since the late 1990s. It's not like Carly hasn't cheated on other men, though, often with Sonny. When she nearly married Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth) in 2014, it was Franco who stopped the wedding by playing a video of Sonny and Carly in bed together.

Back in September 2021, a presumed dead Sonny walked in on Carly about to sleep with his best friend Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) in the bed she shared with Sonny, but discovering Sonny was actually alive put the kibosh on that moment that was supposed to be Jason and Carly's wedding night. Needless to say, Sonny and Carly — or "Carson" as they are known in the social media world — have had problems staying together for decades. Now that Carly found Sonny in bed with Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros), might they actually be done for good?

How Sonny and Carly's latest relationship started falling apart

Sonny and Carly had been going strong as a "General Hospital" pair for several years and seemed due for a shakeup when a bridge collapsed in New Jersey, plunging Julian Jerome (William deVry) and Sonny into the icy waters on Christmas Eve in 2020. Julian's body washed up dead and Sonny's body washed up alive near a small fictional town in Pennsylvania, called Nixon Falls. The problem was, Sonny had amnesia and assumed the name Mike because that was the name on his watch. Sonny didn't know the watch had belonged to his late father, Mike (Max Gail). As Michael Corinthos Jr. is Sonny's real name, it seemed fitting that for nine months, his new friends in Nixon Falls called him Mike.

Port Charles resident Nina Reeves also turned up in Nixon Falls to see her old friend, Phyllis (Joyce Guy), the woman who had taken in Mike. Nina recognized that Mike was mobster Sonny Corinthos and called Carly to tell her that her husband was alive, but Carly did what Carly does and yelled at Nina for wanting to see their shared grandson, Wiley. Since Wiley's mother, the late Nelle (Chloe Lanier), was Carly's sworn enemy, she had some issues with Nina. Carly was also the woman who neglected to tell Nina that Nelle was her long-lost daughter after Nelle died.

Carly rages at Sonny and Nina

Nina made a split decision when her anger with Carly kept her from telling the woman her husband was alive and well, with some memory issues. Then, she kept up the ruse for six months while she and "Smike" (as he was known in the Twitterverse) fell in love. Nina didn't mean to fall for Sonny and tried to tell him who he was several times, but he told her he didn't want to know.

When Sonny's memory finally returned, he made his way back to Port Charles and learned Carly had wed Jason ostensibly to save their mafia business when he found the pair in his bedroom together. Jason and Carly quickly took off their wedding rings despite admitting weeks earlier they had loved only one another for decades. Jason tried to save his brother, Drew (Cameron Mathison), and was allegedly killed when Steve Burton chose not to comply with ABC's COVID-19 vaccine mandate, according to TV Insider. Carly mourned, but then her fury raged like an inferno when she learned that Nina knew all along that Sonny was alive, but that he neglected to tell her he had fallen in love with Nina. Carly moved out, Sonny begged for her forgiveness, she didn't show up for a date, but Nina showed up, and that is how Carly found Sonny in bed with another woman once again.

Sonny and Carly seem over and fans like it that way

Although Sonny and Carly have been a popular couple for years, many fans think it might be time for them to move on. Some believe they have had an unhealthy relationship for years, while others love Sonny and Nina together.

"I loved every second of #SoNa today," one Twitter user wrote. "I knew when they got together it would be so good but it exceeded my expectations with their dialogue and their hotness together I want more." Another fan enjoyed that softer side of mobster Sonny that his Mike persona brought out. "This tone that Sonny is using is when he was Mike. Carly has never seen this side of him," the fan tweeted. "I kind of like it, it's sexy and honest. No screaming and not intense. He is calm when he is with her."

Even if Sonny doesn't end up with Nina, other fans think it's time Carly and Sonny got each other out of their systems. "Their marriage always been weird & toxic," another fan lamented. "We just wanted them to stay together because all we got use to was Carly & Sonny, Carly & Sonny."

Finally, another fan tweeted a summation of their long and tortured relationship through the years. "Sonny and Carly are awful together!" declared this Twitter user. "They may love each other but it's a toxic love which makes it unhealthy. I hope they are done for good for this time but I doubt it."
